Hi everyone,
I’m looking for advice, similar experiences, or input from anyone with veterinary neurology experience.
My dog is 12 years old, mixed breed, and started having seizure-like episodes about 6 months ago. The last two episodes happened almost exactly one month apart.
The seizures last up to 2 minutes. He loses consciousness, urinates, and has saliva/foaming from the mouth. Afterward, he recovers within a few minutes and goes back to normal.
We’ve seen several vets. At first, an ear infection was suspected and he was treated with antibiotics, but that does not seem to be the cause. Unfortunately, we don’t have a veterinary neurologist in our city.
We have done extensive bloodwork twice. Everything was normal except the second time his ALP was elevated: 438.
Between episodes, he is active and happy: eats well, drinks normally, sleeps well, walks, runs, jumps, and seems joyful.
Other symptoms:
-Occasional trembling, usually after loud/sudden noises or when chewing something hard;
- Sometimes presses his nose into the ground while lying down;
- Sometimes his back legs give out or his rear end sways, especially after sleeping;
- No head tilt;
- No eye movement side to side;
- No obvious vision, hearing, or eye problems.
Because MRI/neurologist consultation would require traveling to another city and would be expensive and stressful, I’m trying to understand the most reasonable next step.
Would you prioritize a neurologist consultation, brain MRI with/without contrast, a full neurological exam first, or something else?
Thank you for any advice.
