Switching from Manufacturing to MEP

Hi all! I wanted to get the opinions from folks that work in MEP. I am currently a process engineer in manufacturing. I have 5 years of experience and have worked at three different mills (two different companies). I currently like my role but the industry I am in is very niche. The money is great (130-140k after bonus in a MCOL area) and the benefits are awesome too. But my life long goal has been to own my own business. I have some friends that work in the MEP field and they seem to enjoy it. After talking with them I am considering going to work at a MEP firm and getting my PE. I know it's not nearly as simple as getting your PE and then starting your own firm but I plan to get my PE and learn the business and then see if trying to start my own firm is something I still want. My uncles and my older brother are all general contractors who do residential and commercial work. They have mentioned the idea of me getting into MEP because in the area that they work a lot of the firms don't have enough engineers and they want me closer to home lol. I just wanted to get all of your thoughts on me changing industries. My current plan is to spend the next 1.5 years getting my FE done and taking my PE exam before I leave my job to begin the 4-year work experience under a licensed PE to get my stamp.
