The silence in Aokigahara might actually be messing with people’s heads (theory)

So I was watching a video about Aokigahara and something stood out to me. Some parts of it are almost completely silent, noticeably quieter than other forested areas. And if you’ve ever been in any forested area you know that’s weird, because normally you’d hear something. I have been to some forests in Japan and while it’s quiet, the sound of insects, birds chirping, wind moving through, all these make a small difference between “calming” and “uncomfortable”.

I read that it’s because the forest sits on a thick layer of volcanic rock from Mount Fuji’s old eruptions. That dense lava basically absorbs sound. So certain parts aren’t just quiet, they’re geologically, structurally silent.

Here’s my theory. There’s research on anechoic chambers (rooms engineered to have zero sound) and apparently people can’t handle them for long. The brain starts generating its own noise. You hear your heartbeat, your nervous system, and some people even hallucinate. The mind panics when there’s nothing external to latch onto.

So imagine entering Aokigahara already knowing what it’s known for. That’s already sitting in your head. Then the silence strips away every sound that normally grounds you in being alive. Whatever’s already in your mind gets louder. The forest isn’t haunted, it might just be amplifying what people bring in.

Just a thought I couldn’t stop thinking about
