Grinding sound in 2nd Gear

Going to look at a 2008 4.0 4*4 with a 5 speed. Around 125 k miles. Current owner says about a week ago a light grinding sound started any time driving in 2nd Gear. Seems to think it's coming from near the front of the truck. Wondering if it could be the timing chains or if it sounds like it's more drivetrain related?

Has anyone else dealt with issues like this before?

Looking at two trucks right now. Both are around 125k miles and $5000. Both have five speeds.

The Mazda is very clean, has been garage kept. I prefer the 3 litre engine over the 4 for reliability and gas mileage but the major draw back is rwd. I live in the PNW so winters are mild and snow is uncommon but I worry about driving in the snow with RWD only. If anyone has experience with that, I'd love to hear. Also a single cab

The Ranger is a super cab but a bit more banged up, high in major mostly just looks. Fwd is obviously a plus but the truck is further away from me.

Would anyone recommend the Mazda over the Ranger or is it just a slam dunk to get the FWD truck?

Thanks!

Edit: meant to say 4*4 not fwd.

Hi all,

I've been looking for a Ranger for a long time and this one ticks most of my boxes. 1995 4.0 OHV 4*4 with a 5 speed. 197k miles. Seller is asking for 2700.

Some small issues include power steering leak and abs light. Ac works but not well. Recently had radiator replaced as well as belt, rear shocks and fuel pump. Seats are a hit rough but I feel they would be easy enough to replace. I am a mechanic so I feel like I can take care of many of these issues as they arise.

Seller says its being sold as they've upgraded to a newer truck.

I'm newer to the ranger scene so I would love to hear any thoughts from people who have more experience with these trucks. Thanks in advance.
