Figma workflow question: Is there a way to get bidirectional binding for variables, or are we doing this wrong?

Hi,

We are building websites and we have a Figma design file that contains all the design system blocks: basic blocks (like headings, accordions, buttons, etc.) and also more complex blocks (sections). They are all mapped to use Figma variables so that we can easily export them from Figma and import them in our code for each new project.

The problem is that right now the variables don't have a bidirectional binding to the components. What this means is that editing a variable will automatically update the component, but updating the component visually (for example resizing it or changing a color) will lose the pre-existing variable binding. This means our designer has to manually find and set the variables instead of doing it visually as before.

What is the solution to this? Are we thinking it the wrong way ? How can we make this binding bidirectional, or if this is the wrong mindset, what is the correct mindset for working with Figma in 2026 and exporting variables and other info to be used by our developers ?

Thanks for any constructive feedback :)
