Was my friend rightfully terminated for a no-call/no-show in this situation?

I am reaching out in behave of my best friend. He’s in his 30s and has always been an extremely professional worker. Currently he manages a restaurant but was looking for better hours and benefits. I am just bringing this up to support that he is a hard worker and not some lazy bones.

Long story short the UPS he applied to is in a college town with high turnover and a younger manager. Basically he was told by the manager that he will text him if he needs him to come in. So he wakes up early and gets no text. Fast forward he gets a message later saying he was a no-call no-show and he was actually supposed to come in unless there was a text. He is 100% certain he was told the opposite. He tried to reach out to the manager but didn’t get a response.

Honestly, this kind of mentally messed with him more than anything because in his current job he literally fires people for the same thing and he has always been upset when people no-call/no-show. He is extremely hard working and it was upsetting just to have that label.

Is there something else he could be doing or should be doing? I know with corporate rules sometimes this is just life. But I figured I’d reach out because I really want him to succeed. Thanks.
