Built in magsafe phone charger without exposed cord
Should you do this? Probably not, it involves some invasive work inside your new car and that isn't a great idea. I am a bit mad when it comes to modifying things and having exposed cords. Follow this journey if you dare. https://www.printables.com/model/1714514-ioniq-5-magsafe-phone-charger-replacement
- Finished product, though the model I posted has a slightly smaller ring around the charger. This one almost interfered with my camera bump, so I thinned it up. It is also proud enough to my camera bump doesn't touch the matt. I have a s25 edge.
- Remove the mat below the cup holder and pull out these two screws.
- Scary part, this requires a big wide plastic trim tool and a lot of force. Here is where you can break stuff or hurt yourself, and why I don't think most people should do this. Pry up really hard and the whole top section comes off.
- This the top plate off, flip it over and 4 screws will remove the charger. The connector has a little release tab inside it and should require very little force to remove. If you think it needs more grunt, you aren't doing it right, it should be very gentle.
- Enter stage right my 3d print with a qi2 charging puck glued in. I suggest using one with a tail, it makes the setup more compact.
- These two little thin tabs were in my way so I bent them to get the printed part installed. The front and back screws have different widths, so this only goes in one way, tail towards the back.
- With the top plate off you can see where you are drilling, most everything above the USB C connectors is free. I think a step drill bit offers a better hole with less likelihood of the bit trying to screw its way into thin plastic.
8-9. Hole complete, fish the cable through and I used a rubber grommet to make it look nicer and less likely to cut the cable jacket. 1/2" was enough for my connector and the right size for a grommet.
