How do you get into a guild?

I’ve played the game on and off for like 6yrs now, and I’m currently low Plat. I rarely fight someone that isn’t a part of a guild. I have very little clue on what guilds are/do and how/why you would join/find one. Are they like clans in Clash of Clans or something?
