I’ve lately felt that while I consume a lot of news, I’m mostly just ingesting other people's opinions rather than forming my own and I’d like to be better.

I’m a big fan of Ali’s geopolitical analysis on the FJ pod. He seems to have a really broad knowledge base that help’s inform his takes, and I’d like to get to a point where I have that kind of context myself. Right now, my understanding of Australian politics and foreign policy, and geopolitics generally, feels pretty surface level.

So basically, looking for recommendations on high-quality news sources. I’m willing to spend $100-150 a year on subscriptions if they’re actually worth it. I'd obviously prefer free or cheaper options where possible.

I’m also looking to broaden my knowledge of how systems work. Any books, sites, or long-form outlets that explain how the Australian political system and global foreign policy actually function (beyond just the daily cycle).

I know it’s important to read across the spectrum, I'm fine with that.
