respiratory therapist considering changing to PT

Hi everyone!

I've been a respiratory therapist for 2 years. I truly never enjoyed the field but stuck it through. I've tried every aspect of it from the hospital to medical equipment to work from home. I came to the realization that the field itself was very draining for me. The work culture of having to do night shift for years is unrealistic to me and the jobs in my area are very limited as well. Props to the RTs who can do terminal extubations and move on with their shifts, but that just isn't me.

PT is something I've always been interested in, but unfortunately when I got my bachelors, my GPA was not the best. I'm at a point in my life where I realized if I want to make a change, it should be now as I'm 26 yrs old. So I was thinking of redoing my bachelors and then applying to a DPT program.

I really dread making the same mistake again of jumping into a field and being unhappy and wasting a lot of money, so I wanted to see what advice there is to make sure this is the field for me. I am planning to shadow local PTs to see what the field is like as well.

Any advice is appreciated!

▲ 4 r/SLPA

hi everyone! I currently am a respiratory therapist and have been working for the past 2 years. I have tried everything from hospital setting, DME, SNF, to even having a remote job (which is very rare).

No matter what job I've had, I've come to the realization I am not passionate about what I do and dread work everyday. RT has been too stressful of a career for me due to how much pressure it is to take care of someone's life (if that makes sense) and because there are not openings where I live. I find myself wanting to be in the medical field still, but have less direct patient care. I have been considering going back to school for SLPA and hopefully head into SLP, but I don't want to make the same mistake I did with respiratory.

In the area I'm in, there are plenty of school positions open and positions in nearby major hospitals.

How do I figure out if this would be a good career path for me?

Thank you!
