I’m a sophomore at a state school in the US and I’m currently a business analytics major. The actual classes are fine, not my dream life or anything, but I can do the work and my grades are decent. The problem is that I kinda can’t stand the vibe of most people around me in the program. I know that sounds dramatic and maybe unfair, but it’s like everyone is constantly talking about internships, LinkedIn, “networking grindset,” who got what offer, and how they’re “cooked” if they don’t get into some consulting club by junior year. I’m not lazy, I promise, I just don’t wanna make my whole personality sound like a recruiting email. Lately I’ve been taking a GIS class for a gen ed and I actually like it way more than I expected. The people there seem more chill, the projects feel less fake, and the professor said I could pair it with data stuff and still have decent job options. But I’m worried I’m just running away from annoying classmates instead of making a smart academic choice. My parents are very much “finish the practical degree” people, and my advisor basically gave me the professional smile and said both paths are “viable,” which told me absolutley nothing. Has anyone switched majors because the culture of the department felt off, not because the coursework was impossible? Did it end up being a red flag you listened to, or did you later realize every major has its own weird little cult energy? I don’t want to make a goofy decision over vibes, but I also don’t wanna spend two more years pretending I care about case competitions and coffee chats.
