IL - Wondering if I should pursue legal action
Illinois, USA
About 5 months ago I interviewed for a non-profit organization that was hiring. I went through several rounds of interviews and was offered the job. Initially they wanted to do a contractor position but changed it to regular employment. The job was conditional based on bg check which we knew would clear so they sent me my work equipment which sat in my house for months. The bg check finally cleared and I started working. Some things to note: the job requires approval to work other jobs, the job is remote with an expected 25 hours per week, the team is compromised of 3 other people (including the supervisor). Everyone works independently with one or two weekly zoom team meetings and just texts each other questions.
There was no official training, just "sit in with other members to learn". I tried to sit with two different members but their people never came onto the meetings, so I used the time to ask questions and get familiar with the process. I sat with my supervisor on one of her calls to listen in and only offered a small comment when prompted. Everything that was assigned was done in a timely manner per their regulations. During my 1x1 meeting with the supervisor I expressed that I hoped I would get busier because I was barely working an hour per day. I let her know that if she needed support on any projects I would be happy to help while I continued working on my tasks (which is to email people to setup a meeting, then have the meeting, and submit paperwork. Phone follow-up is allowed so I was also reaching out that way). I had a successful meeting with one person and was in the process of setting up a meeting with a second person, so I was making progress with my tasks. There was never any negative feedback, no coaching guidance, no concerns raised. I was actually told I was doing things well, very proactive, and picking it up well.
Yesterday, I got a random call and was told I'm being let go because "you have a stronger computer background and don't fit the role". All of my devices were then deactivated. Today I got a generic email that "we assessed fit for the role and decided not to move frward with your employment." My background is mixed in computer science and communications, both of which are clearly expressed on my resume. The company asked for ways that AI could be incorporated into the role so I, along with all the other team members, gave ack and ideas. Nothing outlandish that should have detracted from my other skills.
I basically waited for this guaranteed job for 4 months only to be told I'm a bad fit after barely a week and then terminated. So my question is, is there a case here for legal recourse or is it just a shit situation and I can't do anything about it?
