Extracting 2 baby teeth for tooth transposition?

Hello, recently I took my 9 year old to orthodontist for consult and they discovered his tooth transposition with canine and molar. He suggested pulling his baby molar and canine to make room for the teeth (which will be coming down swapped and need to be reshaped), and then placing a spacer. Right now they’re basically over top of each other and he doesn’t want them to damage each other while they’re up there, and thinks they might come down less crowded if there’s space for them.

I’m not sure how I feel about this. It’s not like pulling the baby teeth will make them come down faster. He will need braces later anyways. I know he eventually will need the baby canine pulled because there will be no tooth above it to push it out. But now he will have 2 teeth missing on one side for who knows how long and it’s a hard age already for self esteem, not to mention he’s absolutely terrified to get them pulled.

This is supposedly the best orthodontist in town. Maybe I should go out of town for a second opinion? Or wait a bit longer to pull the teeth? Seriously considering cancelling his extraction appointment this week.
