Mixing a guitar cover over the original track

I’m trying to mix a metalcore guitar cover over the mastered original track.

The original already has dense rhythm guitars, so if I match the tone too closely, my guitar disappears into the mix. I could make my tone more different so it cuts through, but then it starts to lose the original vibe, which feels like a problem for a guitar cover.

Without stems or a guitarless version, is it better to reshape my guitar tone slightly, such as adding upper mids or presence, reducing low mids, using a brighter cab or IR, or lowering the gain for more pick attack?

Or should I EQ the original track instead to make space for my guitar?

Any practical advice would be appreciated.

Why zombies if that's not the point?

I get that a lot of zombie movies aren’t really “about zombies,” but about society, survival, politics, humanity etc. Which makes me wonder; why use zombies specifically if the actual focus is somewhere else?
