I was diagnosed as T1D around 5 months ago, since then I have achieved an A1C of 6.4% and I am managing really well, 94% of the time I am in range (edit: 4-10mmol) with no hyper (being >13.3 mmol) or hypo events.
Around a month ago my diabetic nurse said I no longer needed her support as within a few weeks of being diagnosed I had stabilised. However, that changed when I went back to work, I found myself dipping into acute hypos.
I was also diagnosed with severe ADHD (I am medicated now), but before I just sometimes forgot to take my basal insulin and it was much easier to manage and ever since I had stopped using it, it hasn't been long since then but I am managing it well and my glucose level variability is great too (which is when my diabetic nurse said she doesn't need to do checkup calls anymore). But she does not know I have been doing this...
I might be missing something as maybe my body needs some background insulin for metabolic tasks or something.
Or maybe this is sort of like a honeymoon phase when my pancreas is still producing some insulin.
In hindsight maybe I am wrong to keep doing this and I should have just lowered my basal insulin dose, but I also thought about what if I use Metformin (although this probably wouldn't last and isn't really worth the side effects or risk of trying).
Also I eat my fair share of takeaways (I inject twice and I do not go out of range) I usually only eat the same thing though as I know the dosing well for it despite the higher fat and carbs content.
What are your thoughts? Am I stupid? Please enlighten me, I manage really well but I want to make sure I am doing so correctly. I will probably end up just calling up my diabetic nurse but I would love to hear what you guys have to say.
Edit: I use a freestyle libre link, >13.3 mmol is orange, <3.9 mmol is red. 13.3 - 10mmol is yellow and green is 3.9 - 10mmol. THIS IS THE DEFAULT RANGE ON THE APP, I am 94% of the time in green not >13.3 I just suck at being precise with my wording lol. my diabetic nurse said it was her range too, I can change it but I got told I don't have to, it is simply my choice. Either way my A1C is good and variability is good. Thank you guys for the clarity, I thought it would be a honeymoon phase, I will probably just end up lowering my long form insulin dose. Have a wonderful day/night.
Final edit: people are concerned with DKA, ketones get produced at 15 mmol, my ketones levels are low, it literally just shows up as LO on my monitor. I'm not great at being clear about this but I am okay with the default range on the app and being between 3.9 - 10 mmol pretty much most of the time is good enough for me, and I encourage anyone to manage their diabetes on how they want to.
