Amazing weather here in Hokkaido at the moment for hiking and just enjoying nature and the outdoors.
Not far from Sapporo we have some amazing hiking and climbing trails. Here are some photos from yesterday’s adventure.

Decided to head down to the south west coast to hike the Kariba yama trail from the Cape Motta Lighthouse. The trail and campground is closed from the Gokutaki side, so I did a quick recce of the trailhead yesterday afternoon before heading to the campground just north of Setana.
Got up at 0400 this morning to get an early start as it is a 20km climb with 1300 altitude gain. As I arrived at the trailhead there was a LARGE pile of scat still steaming (pictured). As I took the photo, I heard the unmistakable “bark” of a bear. A quick succession of short, deep sighing sounds about 30-50 metres further up the access road around the last bend towards the lighthouse.
I got back in the van and made haste. Needless to say the days hike was called off.
Getting into the Hokkaido wilderness is an amazing experience and adventure. It’s a perfect place to experience nature away from the crowds of Honshu and the other islands.
