Yearly reminder that Harry Kim of Voyager was meant to be Chinese because the writers didn't know Kim was a Korean name
There are multiple examples of early season Harry Kim dropping Chinese wisdom on his crewmates.
In S1E6, The Cloud, Kim reminds the captain of an old Chinese curse: may you live in interesting times.
In S2E7, Parturition, Kim once again lays down some wholesome Chinese wisdom when he tells Tom of the 'ancient Chinese expression' "Stay out of harm's way."
This makes a VERY HEAVY implication that Harry Kim was meant to be a Chinese character, the first prominently featured in Star Trek. It would be odd if a Korean man was going around giving folksy cultural tidbits about China after all. But at some point, the writers figured out that Kim was not a Chinese name and course-corrected to make Harry Korean.
Oh, and also, the Harry Kim that makes it back to Earth in S7 isn't the real Harry Kim but a duplicate from an alternate reality. The original Harry Kim dies and everybody seems to forget about it. Anyway, hope nobody tells his parents! Considering this happens in S2E21, I wonder if it's the Chinese Harry Kim that dies, only to be replaced by... a Korean Harry Kim?
