The Odyssey 70MM film print
Just wanted to talk about a cool experience I had recently in the theater.
I grew up in the 90s and saw a ton of movies in the theaters. I’d usually go every weekend and maybe even during the week to catch movies in the theater.
I was recently in Chicago and saw they had a 70 mm film showing of the Odyssey in their IMAX theater so I went to go see it. When the movie started, it was initially jarring because I hadn’t seen an actual film projected in the theater in probably 15 to 20 years since everything is mostly digital now. Even if the movie is shot on film, it’s still projected digitally these days.
Once the initial jarred reaction eased off, it was a very nostalgic experience. The image had a slight light flicker to it because it was actual light going through actual film. There were scratches and damage to the print which I personally thought added to the experience. And there was a rough edge border around it.
It really brought me back to the 90s of seeing film prints in theaters. Back in those days if the movie had been around for a couple weeks or a month, by the time you got to see it (or seeing it again), you most likely were watching a scratchy, hissy print. Especially in the 99 cent theaters.
I’m not sure when the next time I’ll get to experience it again but it was good to have it at least one more time.
