The Odyssey 70MM film print

Just wanted to talk about a cool experience I had recently in the theater.

I grew up in the 90s and saw a ton of movies in the theaters. I’d usually go every weekend and maybe even during the week to catch movies in the theater.

I was recently in Chicago and saw they had a 70 mm film showing of the Odyssey in their IMAX theater so I went to go see it. When the movie started, it was initially jarring because I hadn’t seen an actual film projected in the theater in probably 15 to 20 years since everything is mostly digital now. Even if the movie is shot on film, it’s still projected digitally these days.

Once the initial jarred reaction eased off, it was a very nostalgic experience. The image had a slight light flicker to it because it was actual light going through actual film. There were scratches and damage to the print which I personally thought added to the experience. And there was a rough edge border around it.

It really brought me back to the 90s of seeing film prints in theaters. Back in those days if the movie had been around for a couple weeks or a month, by the time you got to see it (or seeing it again), you most likely were watching a scratchy, hissy print. Especially in the 99 cent theaters.

I’m not sure when the next time I’ll get to experience it again but it was good to have it at least one more time.

Odyssey IMAX 70mm rerelease for October?

I’m looking to visit NYC for my birthday in October. Is there any realistic chance or rumor The Odyssey will sell tickets for October like how they did for September?

How are the seats?

Got the scraps for the showing of Dune three. I was on the site at 11 AM on the dot. Within seconds the entire 7 PM showing was sold out unfortunately. I got my tickets to the 1130 showing, but most of the good seats were gone:( after di*king around on their site for an hour +, I finally got one of the checkouts to go through and got seats C 10/C 11.. hopefully my neck isn’t pissed off.

I’m making a mini vacation out of this. We’re flying In from out of town to see it here. the last time I was here I saw Oppenheimer in 70mm and it was epic!

Website crashing for Dune tickets

I was able to get some good seats at Regal Opry Mills in Nashville at 4:30 CST, a whole 5.5 hours after the tickets released. I was trying to get them all day and the Regal website kept crashing/not allowing me to purchase so I think it was doing that for everyone and allowed me to get tickets way later than I thought I could’ve. Still a ton of seats in the front few rows if anyone is interested in getting some tickets.

Is this a real imax film strip?

I got this the other day at a Cinemark for a regular screening, no 70mm, Dolby or anything premium. Are these the same film strips that go for $40+ on eBay?

The Odyssey - Woodridge IL

UPDATE: I just called and spoke with a manager. The 10:40 pm show tonight is officially canceled. The emails will be going out shortly for refunds.

Anyone have any clue if the 10:40 pm showing of the odyssey in 70mm will go on tonight? They’ve canceled every other showing for today & don’t want to drive out there unnecessarily.

What's the second best format type for The Odyssey?

TL;DR: is it Dolby Cinema, IMAX GT Dual-Laser, or non-IMAX 70mm?

I live in the Dallas area and had the privilege of viewing Oppenheimer in 70mm IMAX around release and it was amazing. I got that center seat on eBay for ~$80, but now I can't find tickets anywhere close to that. So I'm considering the other options (and this time want to view with family, so not buying multiple tickets even if found at $80 per).

In my brief research, it would seem Dolby Cinema offers the highest fidelity viewing on paper. Arguably IMAX GT Dual-Laser can take the immersion edge, only losing on technical aspects just slightly, especially for films designed to take advantage of its size and aspect ratio (ratio being different is overrated, I can't wait until filmmakers adopt and maximize a universal standard. Dolby can up their screen size while they're at it).

The Odyssey, being for IMAX, makes a case for IMAX GT Dual-Laser in my head. Though I'd use Dolby for most digital films.

Then, there's 70mm non-imax theaters. Do they get the same reels that the IMAX theater does? (I know the hardware playing it is different) Is this format worth staying closer to the original source content, or do digital Dolby/IMAX version produce a better end user experience, even if they are altered by comparison?

And lastly a side question for natives north of Dallas: any suggestions for good theaters of whatever format you think best of the above?

Edit: GT Dual might be only in Austin lol nvm. Whatever the second best digital IMAX format is what I meant then. I'm still tryna get familiar with this sorry.

Imax or 70mm

Guys I can’t watch the odyssey in IMAX 70mm even though I’m in San Francisco, the theaters are fully booked for the next 3 months. What I can do is that I can watch it either in normal IMAX or normal 70mm. But I’m not sure which one is better? Can someone who has experienced both tell me which is better for the Odyssey. Thanks
