An Establishing Forest Garden

Here's a section of contoured planting in Phronesis, our newest Forest Garden. This is the Fourth season after planting began, with new plants added every Spring and Autumn. We're planting directly into the meadow, as it is already rich in support species that attract pollinators and pest predators, and it is composed of many medicinal and culinary herbs.

We started by planting the canopy layer, then shrubs, herbs, ground cover, and finally bulbs. Not labelled but included between the tree contour rows is a biomass/support strip with the following nitrogen fixing shrubs -

Elaeagnus x ebbingei - Ebbinge's silverberry

Elaeagnus angustifolia - Russian Olive

Elaeagnus umbellata - Autumn Olive

Free monthly webinars on restoration ecology by CTRS

Every month the Center for Tropical Restoration Science (CTRS) hosts a free webinar with expert speakers on a subject related to conservation and/or restoration ecology. These virtual sessions are aimed at restoration practitioners, students and likeminded individuals who are looking to deepen their expertise and knowledge in restoration science as well as share their experiences and local knowledge with others.

CTRS is based in Costa Rica and is a project by the Organization for Tropical Studies (OTS). CTRS serves the tropics worldwide.

Webinars are held both in Spanish and English.

The next webinar will be held on May 27th, 2026 at 10am CST and will be in Spanish. The topic is science communication strategies to engage audiences and drive research toward impactful outcomes.

Any farms that can be toured in Sri Lanka?

Hi! I work in an agroforestry role in Australia & have an upcoming trip to Sri Lanka in July-Aug. Just wondering if anyone knows of any spice/jackfruit/coconut/whatever setups that are keen to have tourists!

Thanks legends
