The Owl Trail

Hi -

We're going to be staying on the north side of Ambajejus Lake in July from a Sunday through Friday. I got my KTP passes at Roaring Brook for Tuesday and Thursday and plan to do Katahdin on the day that is best weather and we've got our timing and route all set, no need to tell me I must camp to ensure I get to the top, I have no problems only getting half way up if the weather turns or if it gets too late. My goal is more of exploration vs summitting. I know I can get a Moose pass for Wednesday and Friday to go see moose.

My question is this... do I need to get a KTP if I want to park at Katahdin Stream to hike The Owl on one of our free days? Is there other areas worth exploring that don't need KTPs?

I did get a gate pass for the week.

Things to do Memorial Day Weekend

With the trails being closed, how can I best enjoy BSP and Katahdin? Are there any places to rent kayaks, or some hikes around that offer great views?

Should I carry a tent

I’m headed to a Russell Pond in mid June. Is it worth it carrying a backpacking tent to set up inside the lean-to for bug protection?

I have the whole lean-to reserved for myself.

Reserving Multiple Days Online for Cabins

We’ve stayed up till midnight to reserve a cabin online at Daicey or Kidney for years. Recently they changed the time to 6am which makes it a little easier.

We usually follow up with a phone call at 8am to add days to our reservation since you only do one day a time online.

This morning while watching the reservation viewer we noticed two lines on multiple days before being booked and unavailable in real time.

My question is how are people booking four days in a row online at 6am?

Baxter Park opens for overnight camping May15th.

All Katahdin Trails and the Traveler Loop will remain closed.

Expect the tote road to be wet, and not open all the way through, (or up to Roaring Brook). This means if you're camping in the north end of the park, you must enter through the Matagamon Gatehouse.

Be alert for wildlife in the road, have your headlights on, and drive slow.
