Let's make Canarsie to be like a another Coney Island 🏝
To me, as someone who is a resident and born and raised in Breukelen Houses in Canarsie, I would often study the history of Canarsie and to be surprised heard that Canarsie used be a Seaside resort and most of the land of Canarsie used to be marshlands, islands and was apart of Jamaica Bay, also during the 1860s to 1950s before Canarsie used to the suburb it is today there were a amusement park at the Pier, the L train used to run via East 95/96th to Canarsie Pier to a Ferry to the Rockways and all of Rockway Parkway used to be filled with hotels, casinos, fishing ports, restaurants and many tourists attractions just like Coney Island.
But when the Great Depression hit two fires destroyed the amusement park which they built the Belt Parkway over, the water gotten so polluted in Canarsie Pier that the amusement park closed down, the L train was cut to Rockway Parkway since the 20s, the Italians and Jewish people came in the 30s, the city decided to drain and put land around the marshlands and make Canarsie into a more permanent and a middle class suburban residential neighborhood were all the tourists attractions were built as 🏡, 🏫, strip malls and NYCHA properties(Glenwood, Bay View and Breukelen Houses) and when white flight happened where all the Italians, Jewish, Asians and Europeans moved out to New Jersey, Long Island and Queens and got replaced by West Indians from Flatbush, Crown Heights and Brownsville which is how the neighborhood is today.
As much I love Canarsie like my second mother due all my family living in Canarsie and being a Caribbean majority suburb on the Jamaica Bay which is quiet, working class and has such vibrant Jamaican, Haitian and Trinidadan culture. I feel like Canarsie nothing but a suburban, quieter and cheaper version of Flatbush and besides Pop Smoke, Canarsie Pier and L train Canarsie is so boring, isolated and quiet to where nobody talks about Canarsie unless if it gets flooded, if you went South Shore, Pop Smoke day happens, slept on the L train to the last stop or someone from Flatbush moved to a nice house, Nobody talks about Canarsie at all beside the cheap nice family houses, vibrant Caribbean culture, Canarsie Pier and Pop Smoke nobody knows or talks about Canarsie.
But still I was the mayor or in charge of Canarsie I would buy all the land and redo the area be like Coney Island and extend the L train to the Pier, clean the waters at the Pier and even make Canarsie to be like it was in the 1860s to 1900s be like a another Coney Island.
But tell you what you think about Canarsie down in the comments.👇⬇️
