Hey folks! We are a family couple and both are gamers. Since we discovered SillyTavern and text-based RPG, we almost stopped playing video games.

Don't get me wrong, we still occasionally hop into online games for a raw adrenaline rush. Risking high-value assets in EVE Online still gets our blood pumping and keeps the thrill alive. Yet, regular offline titles just can't hold our attention anymore. Text-based RPGs have completely rewired what we look for in a story. The empathy we feel for our own characters and the NPCs creates a deep emotional connection that standard single-player titles simply cannot match.

We wonder if this is a common pipeline for gamers turning to AI. Did SillyTavern break your ability to enjoy normal video games, or are we just way too deep down the rabbit hole?

What does BYOK mean? 'Bring Your Own Key'. PersonaChat uses Gemini API keys to function. To find out how to get your own API key, check here > https://ai.google.dev/gemini-api/docs/api-key

Why can't I send a message? Either you haven't configured your API key correctly, or you're being rate limited. If you're not a paying user (i.e. you haven't bought Gemini credits, which is totally optional), I'd recommend using Gemma 4 31B since it has unlimited messages - the other models are there for power users.

Why is there no feed? Because everything is local, and I mean everything. The only characters are the ones you build, so you can totally curate your experience and only interact with what you want.

Why not make it more like Character AI? Because online functionality requires servers and servers cost money. No one here wants another subscription model.

My Character/Persona's image disappeared! Images are stored locally so if you move/delete the image you added to it, it won't appear anymore. I'd recommend making a folder on your phone to store these.

Will you ever support iOS/iPadOS? No. That costs money, and requires a Mac, both things I don't have access to.

Been trying different AI companion apps lately and most of them make the free version feel bad on purpose so you pay. Persona is different. The free plan is actually usable, no annoying ads, no message limits, it just works.

What I like even more is that the devs seem to genuinely listen to the community. You can talk to them on Discord and they actually take the feedback into account. Makes the whole thing feel less corporate and more human.

If you’re tired of apps that treat free users like crap, Persona is worth trying.

Firstly, do no listen to posts that have links, those are almost always affiliates or brands. Im a true user, that spends a little too much time exploring this rabbit hole. Anyways, please tell me if im missing any or if you think my list is inaccurate.

1. Secrets AI - You may be thinking that this looks a little different then the rest, and you would be right. However, they have an entire generations page / dashboard that is dedicated for content creation, and it is extremely impressive (tech stack wise). They are always the first ones with the newest models, their backend is fast, theres no queues, and my favourite part is they allow to use the big expensive models. Most sites only offer the cheap ones as those have the highest margin, but Secrets does give you access, prcing varies on what models you use.
2. ZenCreator - Used to be my go to before Secrets, simplistic UI/UX, their generators work well and are consistent, i just wish they always were adding new models for us to try. I feel like there in a position "dont fix whats not broken" but this caused them to fall behind. It still has great prompt adherence, but I would still put Secrets ahead
3. Promptchan AI - One word, OG, haha! - This was the site that I first found that began this journey, so they will always be in my top 5. Would put this one close behind Zen, its a solid site, and it does what it needs to. Which for some is all that they want. I am more interested in pushing the limits and boundaries of the Image models, hence why I put this at 3. But still has great prompt adhearence, easy to use, and it works great.
4. Virtuavixen - Small site, came across it recently. Small selection, but it does work decently. I am including this mainly for the variety, and to show love to a smaller site as it for sure has great potential, and great things take time.
5. This is where I would add the Image models, stuff like nano, Stable diffusion, pony, ideagram, qwen, etc. You need to really know how to raw prompt, the reason I like platforms like Secrets is they've built systems that takes your prompt and turn it into a much better prompt that is structured exactly how the model should be prompted.
