Why is quality control often treated as a final inspection problem?
A pre-shipment inspection can catch defects, but by the time a problem is discovered, the product may already be finished, packed, and ready to ship. At that point, fixing the issue can mean rework, delays, or rejected inventory.
A stronger approach is to build quality control into the production process through three stages:
1. Supplier qualification
Before placing an order, verify that the factory has the equipment, processes, quality systems, and experience needed to meet your requirements.
2. Production monitoring
Quality issues can develop while production is underway. Periodic checks during production can identify material changes, process deviations, equipment issues, or inconsistent output while there is still time to correct them.
3. Final verification
The final inspection should serve as the last release gate, confirming that the agreed specifications were followed rather than being the first time anyone seriously evaluates quality.
The key distinction is simple:
Inspection finds problems. Quality management works to prevent them.
For companies sourcing from overseas, the question is not just "Are we inspecting our products?"
It is: "At what point in the production process are we actually controlling quality?"
