I was going through some of my bins this morning and pulled out this bad boy! This is a Chase from Dunny series 1. Unfortunately the gold paint oxidized because it is close to 25 years old. I’ve got the crown buried away somewhere, I just have to find it to make him complete.
A Sofubi figure may look simple from the outside.
But behind it can be a mould, specialised labour, heat, pulling, trimming, assembly, painting, colorway decisions and years of production knowledge.
That makes the object more interesting than “limited Japanese vinyl.”
The mould creates repetition.
But people prevent repetition from becoming sameness.
That is also why colorways matter, when they reveal something new.
And why scarcity deserves suspicion, when “limited” becomes more important than the work itself.
So what makes a Sofubi meaningful to you?
