Italy was once a great country. I would even go so far as to call it one of the best places on Earth: the golden coastline, the beautiful weather, fresh fruit, helpful people, and streets where you could walk without constantly looking over your shoulder. Life was slower and easier. The food was healthy, people were friendlier, and, outside the major cities, housing and everyday life were relatively affordable.

My country has been declining for years, but the deterioration has become especially visible over the past five to ten years. Poorly controlled immigration, failed integration, and weak enforcement have contributed to serious problems. In many cities, immigrants involved in theft, drug dealing, and human trafficking have made certain streets feel dirty and unsafe. There is rubbish, human waste, and other filth in public spaces. People have changed as a result: they are less open, more guarded, and more afraid.

Reports of assaults and stabbings have become disturbingly common. Police officers are attacked. In my city, bus drivers have gone on strike because they are repeatedly assaulted, and train conductors face similar violence. Many women and young girls no longer feel safe going out alone at night. I certainly would not. The risk of being followed or harassed feels far too real.

Just the other day, an immigrant man died while being restrained by the police. Some left-wing newspapers immediately ran with headlines suggesting that the police had killed him, before any proper investigation had taken place. Witnesses, however, said that the man had been behaving erratically and that the officers had repeatedly tried to speak to him and calm him down.

Emergency medical workers were present and can be seen in the video, but they did not sedate him. The police therefore had to restrain him, and even some civilians helped to hold him down while the ambulance workers stood nearby. Nobody intervened as though the officers were deliberately trying to harm him, because that did not appear to be what was happening.

Nevertheless, people immediately took to the streets shouting about police brutality, racism, and fascism before the facts had been established. Meanwhile, police officers in Italy are frequently placed in danger and are often restricted by laws and procedures that limit how they can respond. Only four days earlier, two police officers in Italy had reportedly been stabbed by an immigrant, yet that incident received nothing like the same outrage.

During the protests in Bologna, sixty-four police officers were injured after major figures on the political left encouraged citizens to demonstrate. Once again, the injuries suffered by the police seemed to matter far less than the preferred political narrative.

I would advise you not to go to Italy at all.

I live in the northern region of Eritrea, in a village where access to healthcare is very limited. The nearest hospital for us is Massawa, but unfortunately it has almost become useless because many basic services are no longer available.

Recently, I wanted to send my sister for an ultrasound. We were told to go to Gindac instead because the service was not available in Massawa. She waited there for almost two months. First, they said there was no electricity, and finally they told us that the ultrasound service was not operating at all.

The situation keeps getting worse. I understand that medical services are expensive everywhere in the world, but at least in many countries, if you can afford treatment, you can get it.

In Eritrea, the situation is becoming more difficult. In the past, doctors would write prescriptions, and if you had family members outside the country—especially those living in Gulf countries—they could help send the medicine. However, with changes in medical policies in Gulf countries, people can no longer easily get medication without a prescription from a local doctor, creating another challenge for many families.

It is very sad to see this situation. The government talks about providing free healthcare, but what would it really cost to allow more private hospitals, clinics, and pharmacies to operate? Around the world, many countries have both public and private healthcare systems.

Unfortunately, whenever people raise these issues, the response is often to blame external factors such as sanctions or foreign countries

For the record, I want to clarify that I am 19. So I was pretty much a toddler during the whole meles regime, meaning I wasn’t really politically aware.

I see a shit ton of dumps on tiktok from people who are so obviously the children of politicians or high ranking government officials, flexing their wealth. Dinners at hotto, brunch at the Sheraton, shopping in Dubai, ALC bottles lined up at Luna, the V8s and military license plates, and of course the classic “VIP car pass” that is truly the cherry on top. And let’s not forget the pics/videos of a policeman saluting them like it genuinely means something.

Every time I see it, I genuinely feel a level of rage incomparable to anything I have ever felt before. Sure, you can’t help the line of work your parents are in, but how do you have the brass neck to post this level of wealth that we ALL know a politician’s salary can’t provide? The audacity to flex stolen tax money TO THE PEOPLE YOU STOLE IT FROM??????IS THAT NOT CRAZY??
Do they not feel even the slightest bit of shame or embarrassment knowing that the Louboutins they’re wearing, or the absurdly expensive bill they just picked up at Marcus or Hotto was actually paid for by the men and women working day in and day out to barely make ends meet for their family? Those men and women who worked tirelessly earned that money. Your parents stole it. And now you’re turning around WITH ZERO SHAME might i add, to flex it in front of the very children of the people your parents stole it from. The fucking IRONY!!!!! THE AUDACITY!!!!!
What angers me even more and actually saddens me at the same time, is people in the comments being sarcastic or saying things like “Please be CBE lakelig,” and it makes me wonder how long, and how bad has the exposure to this level of corruption been for people to just accept it and not have enough anger left in them to fight?
I know for a fact it’s not because they aren’t angry enough. It’s more that they just don’t have enough fight left in them that the anger has hardened into resentment, and the resentment has eventually turned into acceptance. They have just accepted the painful reality that they really can’t change the fact that almost half of their barely there paycheck is going to pad the pockets of a few officials. And it worries me too. Will this anger i feel ever yield into something concrete that it will help reshape the painful truth of my people or will it just just slowly erode into the same resentment, the same exhaustion, and eventually the same acceptance? I hope i don’t, and i hope YOU don’t as well. We need to fight tooth and nail to build a future we can speak of with the same pride we have when we speak of our history. So stop seeing this corruption as a default, let that anger sit within you and have you seething for a great change so no child in the coming generation will have their future determined by their ethnicity.
