hey all, made a free little tool that might save someone here a headache.

i'm a compsci student who started selling bits on vinted and ebay to keep myself afloat through uni. last year i genuinely could not work out if i owed HMRC anything. everyone i asked said something different. the gov. uk pages are fine but long, and i just wanted a number.

so i built one. you type in what you've earned and what you've spent, and it tells you straight away whether you need to register for self assessment and roughly what to set aside. there's even a tickbox for "i'm just selling my own old stuff" because honestly, half the time the answer is you owe nothing at all. runs in the browser, no sign-up, nothing gets stored.

it's not tax advice, obviously — just the £1,000 trading allowance rules and current bands done properly. if anyone spots something wrong, tell me and i'll fix it. that's half the reason i'm posting.

Etsy have introduced a new offsite marketing page that features new data and the results are interesting.

They now list the value of orders based on direct off-site ad clicks (people who click on an ad for your listings) and also the value of orders on in-direct ad clicks (people who click on an ad for someone else's product on Etsy and then purchase a product from you).

The numbers stuck out for me and I did some percentage calculations for my store last 30 days this is my revenue breakdown:

Off-site ads : 10.5%

In-direct offsite ads : 64.1%

Etsy: 25.38%

Thats 75% of all my sales coming from off-site ads not people directly browsing on Etsy desktop, mobile or app.

Which definitely tracks with my theory that fewer people are choosing to directly shop with Etsy. They might be happy to buy from there but it's not there first port of call so maybe optimising for Etsy internal search is not worth spending all your energy on (obviously you want listings that perform and convert but Etsy search maybe less important).

It will be interesting to be able to track these stats and I might do a monthly calculation on my store to see how it changes.

Would love to hear if anyone else has dug into this and how your percentages break out!

For context - I sell physical products, long-term 12+ year old store - Top 1.6% seller

Sales are down. Summers usually bad but im down three hundred quid on last july. I add new stuff, i promote where i xan. Its just dead :( i blame trumps tariffs and the eu regs for limiting my market so much. Trying to do more fairs but those are hit or miss too.

Has anybody used the Etsy tariff calculator and continued selling to the US? If so, how do you do it and do you have to do anything different when shipping?

I just want some idea of the process from the pov of someone whose actually done it rather than just the esty faq before I consider selling to US again.
