What's one football prediction lesson you only learned after getting it wrong?

Every football fan has at least one prediction they were absolutely convinced about...

...and then reality proved them completely wrong.

Mine was relying too much on recent form without paying enough attention to tactical matchups and squad availability.

Since then I've started writing down my predictions before matches, along with why I made them. Looking back later has helped me spot patterns in my own mistakes much more than simply checking whether I got the result right.

Some lessons I've learned:

  • Recent form isn't always as meaningful as the quality of the opposition.
  • One missing key player can completely change a match.
  • Home advantage is often underestimated.
  • Confidence is useful to track—you'll quickly notice where you're consistently overconfident.

What's the biggest prediction lesson you've learned over the years?

Something you used to believe that football has taught you not to trust anymore?

I recently organized my templates into a free printable Football Prediction Workbook for anyone who enjoys tracking match predictions and learning from them over time:

What's one football opinion you had before the 2026 World Cup that completely changed after watching the tournament?

The World Cup always changes the way we see teams and players.

Maybe you underrated a team that surprised everyone. Maybe a tactical idea proved more important than you expected. Or maybe a player completely changed your opinion.

For me, this tournament was another reminder that football isn't just about star players. Team organization, tactical discipline, and adapting during matches often matter even more than individual talent.

What's the biggest football opinion you changed after watching the 2026 World Cup?

I'm curious to see how different everyone's answers are.

The average resale ticket price for the 2026 FIFA World Cup Final at MetLife Stadium has reportedly reached $11,117, making it more expensive than events like the Super Bowl, NBA Finals, the Masters, Wimbledon, and many other major sporting events.

Football is already the world's biggest sport—but are ticket prices reaching a point where the average fan is being priced out?

For the first time in a long while, there were almost no real surprises in the World Cup semifinals.

From 2002 to 2022, every World Cup had at least one unexpected semifinalist:

🇹🇷 Turkey (2002)

🇵🇹 Portugal (2006)

🇺🇾 Uruguay (2010)

🇳🇱 Netherlands (2014, considering their pre-tournament expectations)

🇭🇷 Croatia (2018 & 2022)

🇲🇦 Morocco (2022)

But in 2026, the final four are simply the top four teams in the FIFA rankings: 🥇 Argentina (#1) 🥈 France (#2) 🥉 Spain (#3) 4️⃣ England (#4)

Does this mean football is becoming more predictable, or have the strongest teams simply raised the gap over everyone else?

Which recent World Cup semifinal run surprised you the most? 👇

Which FIFA World Cup winning team would be the strongest if every player returned in their tournament form?

Imagine every World Cup champion since 1998 getting one match...

Every player is at the exact level they showed during that tournament.

Which squad wins?

🇫🇷 France 1998

🇧🇷 Brazil 2002

🇮🇹 Italy 2006

🇪🇸 Spain 2010

🇩🇪 Germany 2014

🇫🇷 France 2018

🇦🇷 Argentina 2022

Try to justify your pick beyond just naming the winner—tactics, midfield control, defense, or attacking quality.

Football's fastest free kick was a lie. We proved it. | Ronny Hébereson 211 km/h debunked

Ronny Hébereson's 2006 free kick for Sporting CP has been quoted at 211 km/h for nearly 20 years. No methodology. No source. Just a number that spread everywhere and never got questioned.

We questioned it.

We've been building a frame-verified long-range goal database at longshot.football throughout World Cup 2026 — every distance measured using a to-scale pixel map of the pitch, every speed calculated contact frame to entry frame using verified fps.

For Ronny's goal, the footage is blurry 2006 broadcast quality. We couldn't track the ball directly. So we used the goalkeeper's peak jump as the entry reference and Ronny's run-up movement to identify contact. 14 frames at 30fps. 20.6 yards.

Result: 145 km/h average speed.

That's still one of the most violent strikes ever recorded.

We then applied NASA's drag equation (Cd = 0.25 for a football, sourced directly from grc.nasa.gov) combined with FIFA's official ball specifications (410–450g, circumference 68–70cm) to estimate the peak speed at the moment the ball left his foot:

k = (Cd × ρ × A) / (2 × m)   →   k ≈ 0.01351 m⁻¹
v_max = v_avg × e^(k × d/2)
v_max ≈ 165 km/h

~165 km/h estimated max. Still one of the most violent strikes ever recorded. The reining champion on our database.

Cross-validation: Pape Gueye scored twice for Senegal at World Cup 2026. His first goal — 26.9 yards, verified at 110 km/h average — gives an estimated max of ~130 km/h through our formula. FIFA's optical tracking clocked his second goal at 131 km/h. Same player, same game, same technique. 1 km/h difference between our physics-derived estimate and FIFA's direct measurement.

We're confident enough in the methodology to say: 211 km/h was never real. Where it came from, we still don't know.

Ronny's average still beats every World Cup 2026 strike we've tracked so far. That's the real story — the goal was genuinely extraordinary. Just not 211.

Full video with the frame analysis, bell curve, and methodology breakdown in the comments.
