Ancient Indian Bodhisattva Sculpture from the Kushan Empire (2nd–3rd Century CE)
Made during the time of the Kushan Empire, when Kanishka I supported the spread of Buddhism across northern India and Central Asia.
Bodhisattvas in Buddhist art were shown with royal ornaments and jewelry to represent wisdom, compassion and spiritual strength. The detailing, drapery, and body form in Kushan sculpture show a mix of ancient Indian craftsmanship and Greco-Roman artistic influence.
