Could the lyric "Them good ol' boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye" from 'American Pie' be misheard.

First time posting here, might be the wrong subreddit.

I learned that Don McLean's iconic folk rock song is misheard and sung wrong and the context changes everything. I was listening to Q on CBC radio.

  1. The Misheard Version: "Them good ol' boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye"
  2. The Actual Lyric: "Them good ol' boys were drinkin' whiskey in rye"
  3. The Context/Meaning: Firstly, it just makes more sense that to drink whiskey in a "Location" instead of whiskey AND rye. Rye is a type of whiskey.

Here is the episode. the whole episode is interesting, but they start discussing the lyrics at the 9:50 time mark.

Why *did* American Pie drive the Chevy to the levee?

Location of Rye, NY - Here

Location Of Levittown, NY - Here

Anyone agree with me here?
