I went to watch Project Hail Mary in IMAX to Eros INOX IMAX theater at Churchgate, Mumbai, India and here's the review.

Getting the specs out of the way first, this is a 1.90 IMAX with Laser (IMAX XT Laser 3D) venue with 5CH audio. The screen is 55 Feet Wide, with the screen spanning top to the floor.

I will not repeat things that were covered by u/kdcloudy, just some quick updates

- The best row be seated is probably H. we were on E, and it felt like I am quite far from the screen.

- This theater usually has cheaper tickets than the other Laser IMAXes in Mumbai, and at times also cheaper than the Xenon ones.

- The projector quality is great, and the contrast was very well managed even in the dark scenes.

- The sound system is great too, absolutely no complains on that side. (Will recommend Dolby Atmos/Cinema and the IMAX CoLa at Phoenix Palladium for 12CH IMAX for even better experience)

- However, during the bright scenes, the light reflects on theater's iconic white decor on the sides.

- The screen is still wrinkled at the center. You can see the horizontal lines at the center of the screen, and it is noticeable during bright scenes.

This theater worked out for me for Project Hail Mary because it was a mostly dark movie, but if I was watching a movie like Dune here, I would definitely be disappointed.

it's a good last option for laser IMAX because it's close to Churchgate Station & usually cheaper than other IMAX venues. I will still hold Wadala and Borivali higher. (will try Palladium and BKC soon. Viviana is old xenon, but still decent if tickets are reasonable.)

If you despise the 3D format like I do and want to try a different format, I would highly encourage everyone to check out the Onyx Screen at Inorbit once. Instead of a projection it is a huge Samsung LED screen, with rich deep blacks and a crisp quality. Watching BND on it was a really engaging experience as every color was so vibrant. To top it off it has Dolby 7.1, while I would say it was particularly too loud and a little unbalanced during the trailers - I found it to be perfectly fine and also amusing to listen to throughout the film. The seats are extremely comfortable with there being a rotating little table attached to the seat ( as it is a diner) and all the seats are spacious enough with really good leg room. Give it a try once.

I haven't seen Oddesy yet, but I'm planning to watch it on August 15th in IMAX. The bookings aren't open in Mumbai yet. Maybe they'll remove it from IMAX because of the new releases this weekend? Please tell me!

Curious to know if anyone has watched The Odyssey in both PVR Palladium (4K Laser projection) and in another IMAX (2K Dual Xenon Projection)

I’ve watched different films in both, but never the same one to be able to compare it directly.

Hence curious if anyone has done with exercise for the same film, Odyssey or otherwise.

With the current craze for Christopher Nolan’s Odyssey and tickets for IMAX going above ₹3,000, you should know that not every IMAX is the same. Some have newer laser projectors. Some have much better sound. Some have huge screens but with older tech. Others have excellent picture quality but are smaller in size.

Unfortunately, theatres rarely advertize these differences, and a lot of information online is outdated or simply incorrect. This guide combines information from IMAX, exhibitors, industry reporting, and community experiences to help you choose the right cinema hall, depending on what you value most.

First, some IMAX terms explained in plain English

You’ll see these terms thrown around everywhere, but they’re much simpler than they sound.

IMAX GT Laser

This is IMAX’s true flagship digital system—the standard used in the very best IMAX theatres in the world, like the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood.

It uses two full 4K laser projectors working together, capable of the full 1.43:1 frame on purpose-built giant screens, with the highest brightness, contrast and colour volume of any digital IMAX system.

Our Country doesn’t have one. No venue in India runs GT Laser. It’s included here for context—so you know what the ‘best possible IMAX’ actually looks like, and that nothing in the city reaches it.

IMAX Laser (Commercial Laser / CoLa)

This is currently the best digital IMAX system available in Mumbai.

It’s a single projector with a dual-lens configuration, using native 4K laser illumination to produce a brighter image, much higher contrast, deeper blacks, richer colours and visibly finer detail than Xenon. Fast-moving scenes also look cleaner and more stable.

(Worth knowing: this is one tier below GT Laser above—CoLa is the best digital system Mumbai has, but it isn’t IMAX’s flagship.)

It is also paired with IMAX’s full 12-channel sound system, which provides much better positioning of effects around the auditorium.

If picture and sound quality are your highest priorities, this is the standard you should be looking for.

There are only two Cola IMAX laser venue in country one at Mumbai and other at Delhi.

IMAX XT Laser

XT Laser is still laser projection, so picture quality is significantly better than Xenon.

However, it isn’t the same system as Commercial Laser.

XT was designed as a more affordable laser solution for multiplex chains. The image is excellent, but it lacks some of the brightness, contrast and flexibility of CoLa. XT supports both 5CH and 12CH sound setups.

Think of XT as a very good laser IMAX—not quite the flagship version.

If you read the term "IMAX with Laser" most probably its going to be the Laser XT system.

IMAX Xenon

This is the older generation of digital IMAX. It uses two Xenon projectors working together.

The image is still brighter and sharper than a regular multiplex screen, but compared to newer laser systems it has noticeably weaker contrast, less vibrant colours, softer detail and greyer blacks. Most people who have seen both can immediately tell the difference.

If you’ve never watched laser IMAX, Xenon will probably still impress you. Once you’ve experienced laser, it’s difficult to go back.

Some cinema chains like PVR are notorious for turning off one of the two xenon projectors to save money, significantly reducing image brightness and contrast and killing the experience. Patrons should raise a complaint to the Floor Manager as soon as possible if they find out such practices are happening, especially since IMAX tickets are expensive and it’s your hard-earned money. Inorbit Malad, INOX Ghatkoper is notorious for doing this.

Screen size

The most important aspect of the IMAX movie-watching experience. However, bigger isn’t always automatically better.

A huge screen with a poorly calibrated projector won’t necessarily produce a better experience. Whether it’s a Xenon or Laser venue, the image should be properly calibrated and projected. IMAX used to run calibration daily, but nowadays they don’t, and hence many venues suffer from poor image quality.

Ideally, you want both: a big screen size with impeccable image quality. That should be the preference for most enthusiasts looking for the best IMAX experience.

1.43:1 vs 1.90:1

These numbers refer to the shape of the IMAX image.

The tallest IMAX screens in the world use the 1.43:1 aspect ratio, while most commercial digital IMAX theatres—including every IMAX in Mumbai—are 1.90:1.

In practical terms, don’t worry too much about this. None of Mumbai’s IMAX theatres can show true 15/70 IMAX film presentations, so for almost every Hollywood release you’ll be seeing the same expanded 1.90:1 IMAX version regardless of which theatre you choose.

Worth knowing: Mumbai actually did have a true 15/70mm IMAX once. The Wadala theatre opened in 2001 as India’s first IMAX—a 520-seat dome, the largest in the world at the time. It was converted to digital as film-print logistics became unviable, following the same fate as almost every other 70mm dome in India (only Prasads in Hyderabad held out longer, and even that has since gone digital). So the current all-digital, 1.90:1 landscape isn’t Mumbai lacking ‘true’ IMAX so much as Mumbai losing it.

IMAX 12-channel audio

This is the newer IMAX sound system.

It adds more speakers around the auditorium, allowing sounds to move much more precisely around the room. Dialogue is generally clearer, surround effects are more convincing, and action scenes feel larger without simply being louder.

Only one theatre in Mumbai currently offers this.

However, patrons should not be obsessed with 12CH over 5CH, since Nolan himself prefers and masters his film audio in 5CH. Also, all "true IMAX" 70mm venues worldwide are limited to 5CH only. A well-calibrated venue is more important than how many channels it has.

Specifications represent the strongest consensus across the research sources. Community reports (such as screen condition) may change over time as theatres perform maintenance.

My ranking (best to worst)

1. Miraj Wadala IMAX

If screen size and immersion is the thing that impresses you most, Wadala is difficult to beat. The IMAX with biggest screen in the entire country.

The auditorium feels enormous, and blockbuster films genuinely benefit from the added scale. While it uses IMAX XT Laser rather than Commercial Laser, the picture is still excellent and comfortably ahead of the older Xenon theatres.

This IMAX’s scale and grandness are so huge, it’s the closest you’ll get to GT IMAX in our country. There’s a reason it’s the number one IMAX in our country and the go-to IMAX for KINO movies, with people travelling from other states just to experience it.

1. PVR ICON Phoenix Palladium

It’s the only theatre in the city equipped with Commercial Laser (CoLa) projection and the only one with the newer 12-channel IMAX sound system. The jump in contrast, black levels, colour reproduction and audio precision over the older systems is immediately noticeable, especially in visually ambitious films like Dune, Oppenheimer, Mission: Impossible or Avatar.

Its screen isn’t the city’s largest and is more of scope and proper IMAX Flat version which reduces the height of image, but the overall audiovisual package is comfortably the strongest. If visuals and sound are your highest priorities, stick to this venue look nowhere else.

3. INOX Jio World Plaza

This is probably the easiest recommendation for people who simply want an excellent modern luxury IMAX in country.

It combines XT Laser projection with one of the newest premium auditoriums in the city, producing consistently impressive image quality and a comfortable viewing experience.

If it had Commercial Laser and 12-channel audio, it would be challenging Palladium for first place.

4. INOX Sky City, Borivali East

For anyone living in the western suburbs, this is probably the sweet spot.

It delivers essentially the same XT Laser image quality as Jio World Plaza while being much more convenient for many people. Unless you’re willing to travel across the city specifically for CoLa, Sky City is an easy recommendation.

The seats are a bit uncomfortable, though, and the auditorium’s steepness isn’t that great.

5. INOX Eros

Technically, Eros should rank alongside the other XT Laser venues. But what makes it stand out in terms of grandeur, landmark status, and aesthetics falls short when it comes to proper calibration. This is the weakest Laser IMAX venue in the city.

Unfortunately, multiple recent visitor reports mention visible screen scratches and light leakage, particularly during bright scenes. That’s not a projection problem, it’s a physical screen issue, but it can be distracting once you notice it. Management has turned a deaf ear to complaints raised by patrons since day one.

Another con is the sound, which is the weakest here and lacks bass.

If the screen is replaced or repaired and the sound is properly calibrated, this theatre would likely move much higher.

6. INOX R City

R City still provides a perfectly enjoyable IMAX experience, but it’s now showing its age.

The Dual Xenon projection simply can’t match modern laser systems for brightness, contrast or fine detail. If you live nearby it’s still a reasonable choice, but I wouldn’t travel across Mumbai for it.

7. INOX Inorbit Malad

There’s nothing fundamentally wrong with this theatre.

The problem is simply that every laser IMAX in Mumbai is better.

If this is your local IMAX you’ll still have a good time, but if you’re willing to travel even a little, the XT Laser venues provide a noticeably better experience. Make sure both projectors are on during your screening, since PVR is notorious for turning one off to save energy.

So where should you book?

• Best IMAX Tech: PVR ICON Phoenix Palladium.
• Biggest screen: Miraj Wadala.
• Best in the western suburbs: INOX Sky City.
• Best in BKC: INOX Jio World Plaza.
• Best if you’re already in South Mumbai: PVR Palladium first, Eros second.
• Only choose the Xenon theatres if they’re substantially closer or significantly cheaper than the laser options.

At the end of the day, laser projection is the biggest upgrade you can buy. If you’re choosing between a laser IMAX and a Xenon IMAX, pick the laser one almost every time.
