Hello summer, the dahlias are in bloom
My herbaceous border is a riotous mix of bulbs, perennials, and "annuals" (short-lived perennials here in Sunset Zone 17) where the only rule is "No Bare Spaces." It leads to some interesting situations: summer plants on top of spring bulbs, everything jostling for space, and a climbing Cecile Brunner disdainfully looking down on the chaos like Margaret Dumont in a Marx Brothers movie.
When the dahlias bloom, it's a sign that the rains are done for the winter, and summer (which will last until late October) is here.
