Looking to become a private investigator

Hi, I want to start by saying I’m too knowledgeable on this topic. However I am taking a few law courses and the idea of becoming a PI has become attractive to me. I always grew up with my grandpa, who was a major book person and who got me into reading. I grew up reading Tom Clancy, John Connolly, etc. and so I have a few basic questions about the field.

  1. How long did it take you to become a PI? What degrees do you need?

  2. Did you have to work with the police to get where you are?

  3. What is your approximate salary/pay? Can you live decently?

  4. Kind’ve an optional question for those it applies too, but how dangerous is the job? I’ve heard it somewhat varies. Should I carry a sidearm even if I don’t plan on using it? What tools DO I need?

  5. Personal question, do you like your job? How long have you been doing it for? How hard is it?

Sorry if I’m asking the wrong questions or worded it really. I’m just trying to get a feel for the field, but thank you in advance for any help.

VRC investigations, good or bad?

Is anyone here familiar with Veracity Research Company (VRC) Investigations? I am going through the process getting hired as a surveillance investigator and would like to know how decent or reputable this company is. From what I've read on the couple of Reddit forums talking about VRC, the company is not the greatest. Not to mention the pay seems low at just $25 - $30 an hour where they hinted that if hired I would start at around 25/hr with mediocre compensated miles.

Would VRC be a good stepping stone into the field of investigations? Does anyone have first hand experience with VRC? If so how was your time there? Are the reviews as bad as they say it is?

I do need a job that will pay me more than my current job and get me some real world experience so I am tempted to take the offer if it were to come. Thanks for the help

Need a PI south Jersey Gloucester area

Hi everyone,

We’re in a 6yr relationship but LDR for about 2.5 yrs. For context he has cheated before although he didn’t admit it or understand it was cheating at first but understands. He has been seeing his friend quite often this past week staying at his house, going out smoking apparently and saying late there and even all day. I wasn’t aware that he was so close to this person. I am not convinced he’s telling the truth because his demeanor with me has changed radically and blames me for issues when I’m just reacting to his off behavior. And when he’s on ft and texting I can see his face and you can just tell that face is texting someone not in a guy friend way. A smile, smirk, licking the lips, eyes Beaty.

Yesterday he went over to do fantasy football stuff, I asked how it went he said good only small details and convo was brief. I really couldn’t let this go so I used one of those websites to see if his friend posted while they hung out. He in fact did post but a video of his cat and gf in his room around 9:30, my bf no where in sight and he was there till about 10:40. So I know for a fact he’s been lying.

If ANYONE IN HERE LIVES IN SOUTH JERSEY SEWELL AREA who lives at the white oak apartment at mantua, please I really need to know who he’s actually seeing. It’s a complex so it’s hard to try to look up who lives there but seriously if anyone who currently lives there please help me out. TIA

**yes I know if I already have suspicions I should leave but it’s more complicated than that but that will happen at some point plz no judgement**

Broken bone mystery can anyone give me an explanation?!

This has been a lifelong question about my life, so I joined Reddit just to ask it! So I broke my shoulder when I was about 6/7…. With no memory of it!!! My dad said I was sleep walking and he saw me and put me on the bunk bed ladder (I slept on the top bunk) and that I fell backwards off the ladder! He said he thought I was faking the sleep walking so he put me on the ladder… Mind you I am not a sleep walker I have never done it in my life. I did not even wake up after allegedly falling off the ladder and breaking my shoulder.

All I remember is waking up tossing and turning in bed later that night as my shoulder was hurting, but fell back asleep. It gets weirder. The next morning when I woke up, I could not even sit up to get out of bed. My dad had to remove the whole railing on the side of the bed. He tried to pick me off the top bunk, but could not do so alone, so he called my uncle and together they lifted me off the top bunk. So if my dad couldn’t get me off the bed alone, then how did I get up there?!? The day went on and my dad did not take me to the hospital, and I was walking around with absolutely no idea that my shoulder was even broken! About a week later, my mom picked me up from school (I did not live with her) and she immediately noticed that my whole arm was blue and took me to the hospital where they said I had a broken shoulder.

I am now 25 and the story has always been fishy to me. I have asked my dad many times throughout my life what happened as it makes no sense to me. He has told me different versions of the story. Last night, we were talking about it and I asked him was I really sleepwalking do you promise? And he said he doesn’t remember exactly what happened. My dad is a good person as far as I know but the story is very concerning to me and he doesn’t like when I bring it up and his answers and reactions to my questions are very suspicious. How does one break a bone and not wake up? Please if anyone has any explanations I would love to hear them, or do you think my dad is telling the truth? It is a big question I would love to know the answer to. Thank you!!

Edit:
It is also the only bone I have ever broken.
I do not think I broke it while awake. I remember mostly everything about my whole life. I remember the whole aftermath of the next morning to my mom’s reaction to seeing my arm to being at the hospital, and all the details. I think I would know I broke a bone if it happened while I was conscious, or at least be in pain. I would know. It must have happened while I was unconscious. I have never taken medications (which could have explained not waking up) and I do not have any medical conditions. Can someone sleep walk just one time and never again? And if not what could have happened. I just do not understand. And may never know which is chilling

Is it possible?

My husband has never met his biological father. He honestly has no interest in meeting him, he wasn't a good person from what we know, he was pretty abusive to my mother in law. He knows his father's name, he was born in Mexico but not the city, but lived in Salinas, CA at some point, was in a gang and has two brothers. He knows the name of one brother, but not the other. Unfortunately asking his mom for any information just isn't really possible, and I'm not sure how much his aunt (mom's sis) knows about his bio father. His father has such a common name, so I have had absolutely zero luck finding him myself online. Im sure his aunt probably has a little bit more information thay could help us locate him or his family, but my question is is this even possible? How much information do you need for a private investigator to be able to locate someone? And how much would it cost? I know i said in the beginning my husband has zero interest in meeting his father, but he's missing a whole half of his family history. Not just his ancestry, but he wants to know his family medical history on his father's side. Like are there any genetic things that run in the family, like cancers or diabetes? It something we want to know not just for his future health, but for the future health of our children.

How do I prove my old residence?

I used to live near the World Trade Center and have recently been diagnosed with an illness that qualifies me for health benefits. I would need to prove my residence in 2001-2002. My personal documents don’t get me what i need. I have tried everything i can think of — credit cards, banks, utilities, landlord, IRS, SS etc. No one keeps documents that old. Any ideas? Is there a resource or service that specializes in “cold case” document searches like this?

Advice for gathering admissable evidence for infidelity cases?

One of the most common requests I get from clients is to get into their partner's texts messages and hack their phones. I give the typical speech about privacy laws and how it wouldn't be considered as admissible evidence in any court, but it seems like people feel like it's the only way to prove infidelity. I'd like to explain how our investigation methods can prove otherwise. What tactics do you use to investigate infidelity that have successfully worked?

Is this a weird request? Why is it hard to find a PI?

A lawyer in Los Angeles is having a hard time finding a PI to hire & I’m wondering if the ask is weird or suspicious in some way. The lawyer is seasoned (30+ years) with a good record that the PIs can easily verify so I don’t think it has anything to do with that.

My understanding is that three people need to be served simultaneously or as close to simultaneously as possible to avoid one calling & warning the others. There’s various information about each e.g., home address for one, work address for another; approximate work schedule for two, but nothing for one. And one travels a lot to WA. The firm wants someone to “stakeout” or whatever the 3 people to get a general idea of their weekly schedules. Ideally someone would say - they’re all home on Wednesdays by 4pm, or they all leave work on Mondays between 5 & 5:30 - whatever and service could be scheduled at a strategic time & place(s).

One attorney went to a PI’s office, check book in hand & they hemmed & hawed & acted like they didn’t want the business. They weren’t the only ones either.

Isn’t following people around part of what PIs do? A well placed phone call trying to schedule a meeting or something might get the answers easily as well. It might not be easy money, but it doesn’t sound like hard money. What’s the problem?

And where should one find reputable PIs? They’ve just been using google I think.

Advice for someone wanting to become a PI in the future— is it worth it? Australia

I'm really interested in becoming a private investigator when I'm older. I know I obviously can't work as a PI yet, but I'd like to start developing useful skills now.

I'm especially interested in things like observation, remembering details, research, interviewing, report writing, and understanding how investigations actually work.

For current/former PIs: is it a career you'd recommend? What do you wish you had learned or practiced before getting into the field? And what skills would you recommend I start working on now?

Any advice would be appreciated!

Beware BARK.com for leads

BARK is a scam. Our private investigation firm bought a package of "leads." Out of 10 leads purchased, they resulted in ZERO communication back from the supposed lead initiator. Yet, in most cases we were the sole lead respondent to the potential client, we responded right away, we used calls, texts and emails, and we have excellent qualifications and reviews. Either BARK does not vet their leads to promote legitimate leads, or they are using bots to generate the leads in order to drive revenue. We investigated (cuz that's what we do!) two of the leads and both were not legit. Assuming most of the remaining 8 were also not legit. We have brought this to their attention and they just argue that they don't have control over the lead quality. SCAM! Beware!!
