What was the deal with Nicky and Shifty's relationship?

In Brittle Bones Nicky part 3, we know that somehow Nicky was responsible for Shifty's death, we know that when they were kids Shifty bullied Nicky, but here (in what I am going to assume is some sort of glimpse into the past) Shifty and Nicky look like they were actually getting along based on the left, until of course the instance on the right happened where based on context something happened to where Nicky caused Shifty's death, we can probably assume it was manslaughter and not intentional given he only got 4 years and we also see him cradling Shifty's body in his arms, which doesn't really indicate malice at least.

I don't know what do you all think? A fight that went too far? Or what do you all think?

Ok so what is the full timeline of Nicky‘s life?

Because in the First Song he went to prison at 21 and was in there for at least 20 years. But the third song directly contradicts this by saying that he went to prison at 20 for 4 years and was on probation afterwards and then ran away with the circus.

Or is it that he got out of prison at 20 and then went with the circus for a few months, before being put back in at 21?
