[UPD] ENG 13 - Raymond Falgui

Basta very old white man talaga s'ya na funny naman.

Kung ako man ay judge sa MGI All Stars: Jesus Christ, that's an 8.6!

hello everyone! after pre-enlisting in a bunch of classes, surprisingly i got both eng 12 and eng 13. i have some questions:

  1. is this doable for midyear?

  2. does anyone have a review on how these profs are during midyear?

  3. should i still take a pe class along with these two courses? (just to maximize freshie prio)

[UPD] Eng 13 - Shaw, Thomas Leonard

my experience with sir was quite different from the reviews i read before. compared to my other GEs last sem, super onti lang ng reqs niya (annotated bib and abstract proposal ng inquiry paper, then yung inquiry paper itself with drafts). he’s also very kind (and funny at times).

pagdating sa grading ng papers, i’d say hindi naman ganoon kataas ang standards niya unlike yung sinabi ng mga past reviews abt him—lalo na pag pinag-effortan mo naman talaga yung papers mo. i even remember him saying something like “dont try to impress me w your paper/s, just show me what you have learned in this course” and huwag daw mag-cram ng papers. nag-iiwan din siya ng comments sa submissions.

he really requires reading the readings before attending his class since yun yung magiging central topic niyo for the discussion—dun lang iikot discussion niyo. hindi rin naman mahaba yung reading/s per meeting so hindi siya time-consuming.

one of my fav instructors this sem tbh, very chill and articulate (mapapaisip ka rin talaga sa mga ideas na sinasabi niya sa discussions). i’d say uno-able siya kasi sinikap ko talagang i-perfect yung submissions + nakapagpasa rin ako ng papers for bonus points.

[UPD] Rating all my GE Profs for my last semester!

Henlo! As a graduating Iska, this will be my last ambag to the UP community HAHAHA (OA ik ik)

I hope these reviews will guide all the incoming freshies and seniors when choosing profs this coming midyear and next semester. Take note, I intentionally chose profs who are said to be uno-able based on old Reddit reviews. But that doesn't mean I didn't put any effort this sem ah? I just had to strategize since I had to juggle my 5th 21u streak, undergrad thesis, and post-grad studies preps. Yes, I am very much burned out. Enough backstory, here are my reviews HAHA

Eng 11 ABAO, FRANCES JANE

Ma'am is super chill. We had around 4 or 5 face-to-face meetings for the whole semester, then the rest were online na lang. We only met once a week, then the next session would be asynchronous to answer class forums or read. Her teaching style is straight forward: she uploads the class guide, you read the assigned texts, then answer the discussion questions. She gives chances to those who were absent or want to share more insights in class.

REQS: Class Participation (via Discussion Forums) and 2 Short Papers

I enlisted in her class because I heard she's chill, but definitely not very engaging tho. I took this subject just for the sake of law school preps. It's a 6/10.

Math 10 CAALIM, JONATHAN

Sir is so sipag magpa-F2F and he takes attendance. If you're planning on cutting frequently, I suggest that you don't enlist in his class. In fairness ah, he's mabait because I had A LOT of classmates who exceeded the number of allowable absences, but he gave them a chance to explain why para hindi sila ma-force drop. The subject is easy and you literally just have to listen and read the slides to pass the exams. I was 1 point away from getting a flat uno tho, but it's my fault because I didn't prep enough for LE 1 sayang but whatevs huhu

REQS: Quizzes for every Module (we had 11 or 12), 2 Creative Outputs (1 Pair and 1 Solo), 2 Long Exams

I enlisted because I heard he's nice, manageable naman yung pinagapagawa and very very uno-able. It's an 8.5/10.

PI 100 DAYRIT, LANCE ROMULUS

MY BIGGEST SUGAL! As someone who's graduating, I was DESPERATE for a PI 100 class. I refuse to be delayed just because I won't be granted a slot. I enlisted everyone and a certain DFPP, DFPP ayun pala si sir iyon HAHA. Parroting my previous comment in another post, VOUCH KAY SIR! Approachable and clear magturo. Willing din mag-adjust ng deadlines, bawas ng major req, and most importantly nagbibigay ng feedback! Marami ring chances to get points, so grab them when you can! My command in Filipino is not the best, but I got an uno from him naman despite that :))

REQS: 1 or 2 Essays, 2 Memes, 1 Creative Report, 1 Final Project (By group, infographics and essay), Class Participation. He no longer conducted the Final Oral Exam; Reflection Papers for Bonus Points only

10 sana but sorta maraming pinapagawa. It's a 9/10 for me.

Philo 1 QUITAIN, MIGUEL ELVIR

Very discussion heavy ang classes ni sir, madalas sabog ako during his time since it's scheduled after thesis and lunch. But overall, digestible naman HAHA He's lenient sa attendance, but I didn't max out my absences unlike some of my classmates. If you're a big fan of debating in class or you're a yapper, you would definitely enjoy taking Sir Jevi! He's also willing to adjust class modality, especially during heat waves or strikes. He's also very responsive to inquiries.

REQS: Class Participation, 2 Long Quizzes, 1 Group Assignment, 1 Group Report, Final Oral Exam, and Peer Evaluations

I enlisted in his class because my ex suggested him to me HAHA. I barely spoke in class, but I helped out A LOT sa group works, got an uno tho hehe. It's an 8/10.

Soc Sci 1 LANIOG, JEHU EMMANUEL

Galit sa burgis HAHAHAHA Depressing na lighthearted yung mga discussions (if that makes sense), I actually find his antics funny, but it might not be for everyone since he cusses in classes. He's a batang prof so may lots of energy pa. He teaches really well and you can feel his passion for the social sciences. He gives a lot of chances for incentives too!! Manageable ang requirements and he's nice, but he definitely has his favorites in class I don’t mind tho HAHA

REQS: Weekly Tweets, 3 Occasional Reading Responses, 1 Final Project (not an essay)

I enlisted in his class because of good Reddit reviews. It's an 8.5/10.

HOPE MY REVIEWS HELP! LEZGOOOOO

[UPD] Kas 1 - Mayugba, Jeric

ito ang totoong review HAHAHAHAHA /j

super vouch sa class niya !! i thoroughly enjoyed his class and i like how at times you can feel na discussion yung lesson at hindi lang lecture (if you get what i mean). very manageable workload so if you have heavy subjects or whatnot, it wouldn't place a huge strain on you. marami rin siyang memes that he sprinkles in between his slides but rest assured, he places importance on the events he teaches (especially in the later lessons). i think i got a good grade at his class but wala pa yung grade ko so i can't give a number lol.

overall, really good !! i highly suggest to take his class if you're taking kas 1. you're in good hands.

(ps. hi sir if you're reading this anong thoughts mo po sa ube discourse sa twt)

[UPD] Math 21 - Marc Russel Arcedera

Ang swerte mo kapag nakuha mo sya for Math 2x. If ever man makuha nyo sya sa mga susunod na sem, all you need to know is that you’re in good hands. Super vouch!

[UPD] PE 2 Volleyball - OKUMU, GODFREY

hello, i'm interested in enlisting this as i really enjoy watching the sport and am afraid that i may be becoming too sedentary.

to those who have enrolled under him before, specifically, i want to ask if diving drills and pancake saves are part of what's being taught in class. i worry about these because, one, i am not athletic at all as i really only watch people play, and, two, i have a back condition that may limit or hinder me from going all-out in doing drills where players abruptly have to nearly or actually lie on the ground (like in diving, rolling, executing pancake saves). should i not worry about the latter since this is only a beginners' class?

lastly, would he be understanding of people with certain conditions? i'm kind of afraid he may ask me to drop the course if i let him know about mine. i am encouraged to stay active for my health – it's just that i am out of shape, and potentially, there may occur an instance where i have to sit out if my back is acting up. but i will make it a point to push through as much as possible, especially if the class is not as intensive as i make it out to be in my head.

please enlighten me folks. thank you! 🫠🌈

[UPD] Eng 13 - Ledesma

took this prof last semester but we were under a megasection so ang naka-interact namin the whole sem was the TA and this class turned out to be my most enjoyed class of the first sem and consequently the one i performed the best in as well!!

pls note na nung ako nag-take ng class yung TA yung nag-handle sa'min all through out (from class to announcements to grading tapos yung final grades pinasa lang to prof) and the first and only time na nakita namin si Prof. Ledesma was noong online orientation niya para mag-explain ng syllabus. in case curious kayo, di ata naka-indicate sa crs non na under a megasection pala kami pero
still, same syllabus and grading system so baka makatulong pa naman po yung review hehe

major requirements:
- 2 documented essays / 1 - analysis, 1 - inquiry
- 5 writing activities
- 1 final collaborative project / group work
- class attendance / participation

- requirements were manageable and made sense based on the expected learning outcome of the course and deadlines were very reasonable as well since assignments are always announce ahead of time. google classroom ang ginamit and very structured yet approachable yung mga announcements hehe and usually rin pag nag-assign na ng essay may writing break from f2f class.

- f2f class attendance is expected and sinusundan yung max 6 absences rule pero ang tardy ng more than 30-45 mins i think is half absence na. one of the best and most inclusive systems i've seen to rate class participation since aside sa in-class na recitation kung di kayo nagkaroon ng chance during class na mag-recite the TA uploads google jamboard para dun na lang kayo makakasagot and answers there hold the same weight for class participation!

- TA was very fun and relatable in class and fastest fastest email replier ever in the history of the up system. attending f2f class was a joy and mas makakatulong kung nabasa niyo readings beforehand pero madali naman mag-follow along throughout the session. be mindful na lang of attendance or tardiness and make sure na makapag-participate every once in a while since may no. of pts ata na need para makuha yung full % ng grade for class participation. also, make the most out of the freedom na meron when it comes to choosing essay topics! sobrang gandang opportunity niyan para matalakay anything your heart desires hehe and very open din dito ang TA.

- super valuable ng mga matututunan niyo sa course na to lalo na ge to so very fundamental yung mga matututunan dito about academic writing and critical / analytical thinking na very foundational din for any course! very straight to the point din naman ang pagturo nito and the readings are assigned as complement sa topic na madi-discuss so kahit na medyo mahirapan kayo intindihin yung ilan sa mga readings the point is more on the structure or the message usually and natatalakay naman to very well and in-depth in class.

overall: vouch! proud to say na naka-secure me ng flat uno here; pagbutihan lang po yung pagsusulat at siguraduhing ma-submit lahat ng requirements on time! super nakakatulong din po magkaroon ng constant communication with the prof / TA dahil super nakakatulong yung mga advice, feedback, and suggestions nila esp when working on the essays which make up the biggest part of the final grade. i highly suggest to keep them in the loop sa kung ano na nagiging progress niyo sa mga essays dahil dito niyo matatantiya kung ano hinahanap nila and explicitly din sila nagbibigay ng edits or comments sa docs niyo so sundan niyo lang to the best of your ability kung goal niyo makakuha ng magandang grade here!

[UPD] Philo 1 - OCON, JOSHUA JOSE

Sir is the type of professor na kapag lumabas ka ng classroom, mas marami kang tanong kaysa sagot. He likes throwing out rhetorical questions that he doesn't necessarily want answered on the spot. Instead, he wants you to sit with them, think about them, and continue reflecting even after class ends.

I think that's exactly the point of Philosophy—not necessarily to give you definitive answers, but to make you question things more deeply and see the world from different perspectives.

So if I had to take Philo 1 again, I would choose to take it under sir again and again. SUPER DUPER VOUCH talaga.

Requirements are very manageable and mostly done in groups. Choose your groupmates wisely hehe, because sir gives you the option to choose your own groups naman at the start of the sem. He also grades fairly and transparently, so alam mo talaga saan nanggagaling grades mo.

Our only exam was hard, but honestly, wala namang lumabas na hindi niya tinuro. Sir provides everything from the very start. Utilize the resources he gives because legit, complete na siya—just do your part as a student.

Attendance-wise, just be present. Marami kang matututunan kay sir, so honestly, it's your loss if hindi mo siya papasukan. With that said, sir is also very considerate when it comes to circumstances that affect students. So transport strikes, yung grabeng init ng panahon, and even discussions surrounding rising oil prices and commuting costs at the time, he showed understanding and consideration for students who were affected.

One thing I really appreciated is how he connects philosophical concepts to what's happening in society. He uses current events, social issues, and even memes, which makes the lessons feel more relevant and easier to engage with. The final exam is somewhat like a casual conversation with sir, but don't take it too lightly. Make sure you can still share your analysis and think critically during the oral exam.

Definitely unoable if you put in the effort!!

Miss ko na si sir HAHA (hi sir, if you're reading this kasi sabi niyo nagbabasa kayo ng reddit reviews niyo 😆, thank you po sa pag-accept sa akin through prerog noon. If hindi niyo ako tinanggap, I probably wouldn't have enjoyed Philo 1 this much, more power!)

[UPD] Kas 1 - Guiang

if you want to appreciate ph history but not suffer from lengthy sources, you should take his class 😁 #vouch

unoable pero with effort kasi mararamdaman mo talaga ang zero-based system ng up kay sir HAHAHAHA e.g. 27/30 ka sa midterms, highest you can get na is 97. pero may pa-bonus naman! onti and reasonable ang reqs (mga 60 kami sa class tapos may isa pa atang handle si sir alongside his TAs so i think isa yun why) every end of a lesson, may day na alloted for group worksheets.

may times na info overload pero kung ano ang tinuro, yun lang din ang nasa exams! so dw. also since big section, hindi gaanong interactive and walang recitations during lecture (worksheet days meron) but syempre you can always ask questions

i genuinely enjoyed his class, walang araw ng klase na lumabas akong walang natutunan and lagi akong may laff sa class (funny sha magjoke guys give ko na yan). also, andaming baon na kwento ni sir from his under/grad days 😭 i appreciate his kwentos about up aza freshie rn

if i could take another history course na ituturo niya i would talaga huhuhu 10/10 #1 fan aq

[UPD] Kas 1 - Magallona, Diego Vicente

I have never made a rating for a professor in the duration of my stay in Diliman. However for this professor I will make an exception. How many professors teach you the context and ask you only the context in exams? This is how history should be taught—not with names and rote memorization but with history as it happened with actors and their roles attached to them. Pablo Ocampo is a nebulous figure; Resident Commissioner to America prior to Manuel Quezon who introduced him to the Senate Pablo Ocampo is not. Daniel Tirona, Secretary of War at face value is a hero. Daniel Tirona, attache of Aguinaldo of Kawit Batallion who during his stint in Cagayan pillaged the local rich is not. And the importance attached to these manifests in how the exam is written: through essay-type questions. It has been really inspiring to learn Philippine history from the GOAT, and I got into collecting Filipiniana books because of him

I am writing this review because sadly, prof. Magallona is no longer with the department next semester (midyear). Hope he will return as an MA student so I can greet him again.

Overall 9.5/10. I just wish he asked more questions to us
