I managed to recover the true "Lost Reels" (Jungle Hooks, the predecessor of River Monsters) from a decade-old hard drive!

Back around 2011-12, I watched Jungle Hooks on my friend’s PC and instantly loved the show. I copied the episodes onto my dad’s hard drive and completely forgot about them over time.

A few years later, that PC died, and the whole CPU cabinet ended up sitting in our store-room for more than a decade.

Last week during home renovation, I found the old cabinet while preparing to sell it as scrap. I opened it up and pulled out the HDD along with the other components. For some reason, I became curious about whether the hard drive still worked.

So I bought a SATA-to-USB converter and connected it to my laptop. Surprisingly, the drive actually started spinning but it was making horrible noises. I unplugged it immediately and sent it to a repair guy.

Today I finally got it back almost fully repaired! Some files and folders were corrupted, but many survived including the old Jungle Hooks episodes.

I became a massive fan of River Monsters around 2017-18 and kept watching it regularly until around 2020. During this time I remembered that somewhere I saw some videos related to this man but couldn't figure out...and finally today I have the answer!

As far as I know, Jungle Hooks was basically Jeremy Wade’s very first TV fishing-adventure series from 2002. It was first shot in India and later in the Amazon, and it was eventually rebranded as River Monsters: The Lost Reels on Animal Planet.

Some episodes still exist online, but a lot of them seem extremely hard to find now (or maybe they’re hidden somewhere on the internet that I don’t know about). Somehow I ended up holding onto copies for all these years without even realizing it 😄

The video and audio quality is super grainy by today’s standards, but watching them again after so long feels incredible. I’m planning to try some AI enhancement on them too.

Posting a few screenshots from there!

And if Mr. Jeremy Wade or anyone from his team somehow sees this post, please consider releasing a proper high-quality version of the full series someday 🙌

Edit : I have created a separate post and shared the series. Also sharing the link here : https://archive.org/details/jungle-hooks

River Monsters The Game - I Just Had A Dream

Okay call me crazy but I just had the best dream ever in which there was a new gen video game called "Jeremy Wade’s River Monsters" and I was playing it.

Basically it was an open-world fishing game that blends investigative exploration with fishing simulation.

As the legendary biologist himself, you navigate sprawling, remote ecosystems, from the murky Amazon to the dangerous Congo, searching for freshwater beasts that haunt local folklore.

The journey begins with ground-level detective work, where you interview villagers and analyze environmental clues to track down the exact location of a fabled predator. Once you’ve gathered enough intel, you must customise your tackle, choosing specific rods, reels, and bait tailored to your target’s behavior.

After scouting the terrain, you select the optimal "hotspot" on the riverbank. This strategic phase demands a deep understanding of the environment, forcing you to account for water depth, current speed, and even the time of day before making your move.

The moment you cast, the game transforms into a high-stakes pro-fishing simulator. The calm of the exploration vanishes as you enter a grueling battle of physics and stamina, utilising realistic tension mechanics to tire out massive "monsters" like the Goliath Tigerfish or the Arapaima.

Every lunge and head-shake is a test of your equipment and skill, culminating in a cinematic reveal of the beast before you document the find and release it back into the wild.

TLDR: I dreamt river monsters was a playable game and now i want to see that dream come true
