syep workplaces is really dropping the ball this year

im cohort a which means i ended on friday. my workplace is trying to say for us to come in on tuesday and Wednesday for some presentation stuff and when i told them that my cohort ended they tried using how they told us to fudge our hours for the week (we only came in 1 day a week) and that i technically havent worked the whole thing. but see i was told when i accepted the offer that i was going to be in there 1-2d a week but get paid for it all. but thats not my only issue. from the start it was shown that the dude was disorganized as hell as i had technically applied to be apart of that same place in 2024 but last minute they pulled out and when i started i overheard that another program like syep same thing happened sept for they got pulled out there bc they didnt finish some kind of thing they had to so that they could be a workplace in that thing. he also wouldnt tell us that we was on for work till 1-2d right before the day which i just didnt like how i never knew what day i was working on till 1-2d before and if i had something scheduled i had to change it and the manager seems to think hes above the rules on anything real asshole sometimes too.

edit: i forgot to add this but while looking for proof for everything i found a conversation of him trying get me to buy supplies for the work using my budget which isnt allowed.

Cohort B Paynent issues

I just discovered that they just magically changed the payment schedule and the last 2 weeks aren't 150 dollars, only the last werk is 150. I talked to my teacher person (idk what to call her atp) and she said we either weren't informed about a payment schedule change or are in a different group. But I have a screenshot of the payment schedule. Is anyone else having this issue?

Tbh this is my first and last year with SYEP bc this program is a hot mess.

I was overworked badly that I got a bruise on my arm and leg...

My supervisor had us working at her storage unit, which was not in the job description at all. We were moving really heavy boxes, and the next day my whole body was sore and my back was hurting. I knew this was unprofessional because I’ve been doing SYEP for a long time, but at the same time, I did feel bad because she is running a nonprofit and didn’t really have anyone else to help her. She may even be reading this, but I still feel like I have to share what happened.

We also had to stay an extra 30 minutes putting everything back, which went over our time limit, then had to come back the next day to fix everything again. I ended up getting a bruise on my arm and leg from moving things around. My mom was even upset when I told her because she also agreed that this was not part of my job description.

I understand that nonprofits may need extra help, but this was not what I signed up for when I accepted an administrative position. I’m honestly upset with myself for going along with it, but I also know I was put in an uncomfortable situation. I just hope future SYEP participants don’t have to go through the same experience.

i love SYEP and if u don’t ur not doing it right

ive been doing SYEP since i was 14, i’m 19 now, so for the past 5 years. 3 years working real jobs.

i see so many people complaining about SYEP as a whole when really they just don’t like their provider or work site.

SYEP is a large organization with hundreds of providers and thousands of worksites. if you have a bad experience one year with a certain provider or job, it doesnt mean that SYEP as a whole needs to be shut down 💀. just pick a different provider next year. CALL IN!!!! do your research don’t just pick blindly.

Ive had the same provider for the past 5 years, and yeah theyre ghetto, but they get me that job and often i don’t need to work that hard. Ive also had some nice opportunities since my supervisors known me for a while.

if you have a problem with your work site, you can request to change it!!! at any point! if your worksite is over working you, DONT DO IT!!! all they will do is send you back to your provider to get a different job (as long as it’s early in the session).

most work sites dont take SYEP seriously. i’m pretty sure they’re not even the ones paying us. the city is. THE WORK SITE DOESNT PAY YOU. YOU DONT WORK FOR THEM. you work for SYEP. always remember that. don’t break ur back for minimum wage.

How to report worksite?

Hi, finished my last day but I only recently found out that my worksite might not be SYEP compliant. I had a really bad time but not because I was singled out- the place I worked at had terrible physical conditions and I found out the non SYEP workers get paid way over minimum wage just to put up with this horrible place (the job requires no special knowledge.) The communication in the worksite was really poor and I would be talked down to for following orders from another supervisor when the other would say something else... I don't think these workers are fit to work around younger people they're responsible for training.

Apparently, we have a site monitor but she would always come on days I don't have work and I'm the only SYEP person there. I don't get the point of even having one come when I'm not there?

Also, my shift is way over 6 hours and my lunch is 20 minutes (paid). Is that allowed?

I don't know if they're breaking any formal rules or anything but I don't want any kids in the future working here when they could've been more comfortable at the other worksites learning the same skills in a more professional setting. I'm also really paranoid of being retaliated against so I want to report anonymously.

Syep this year was absolutely ridiculous

This is my first and maybe last year doing syep. I am in my really early 20’s, and for starters the job site I worked at did not respect syep I feel like. My provider is henry street, and the job site I was at, only had me and two other syep’s; the rest of the workers were the full time counselors. For our pay and hours, we are overworked like dogs. The camp I work at is strictly outdoors, even in extreme rain. Lots of staff do not communicate and I have to walk way more than I have to in this heat, and I’m pretty sure because of these rules I developed heat exhaustion. The main staff doesn’t seem to like us but I feel specifically singled out, and there’s times where I’m doing the most work… especially this week, being my last week I did way more work than I had to, also the fact lots of staff are starting to leave.

ENDING PAY

Now that SYEP is ending. I put in a time sheet :

8/2/2026 - 8/8/2026

8/9/2026 - 8/15/2026

I am pretty sure I just got paid for the 8/2/2026 - 8/8/2026 one. Do we get paid for the 8/9/2026 - 8/15/2026 one? If not, why do we submit those timesheets then??

SYEP responded, but I did not think I comprehended it properly..?

"The pay date for Week 5 (Aug 2 – Aug 8) is August 14, and Week 6 (Aug 9 – Aug 15) is August 21." Is what I was sent. Does that mean we get paid on august 21st?

sorry if its an obvious / dumb question. i never really understand the timesheet stuff.
