OPS positions being eliminated

I have it on excellent authority that all our ops are being eliminated and offered positions as either ASD or department managers. I have no idea what the plan is to replace the labor they were doing. Does this mean they were redundant the whole time? Or is Safeway about to take a huge dive because they eliminated a critical position. I guess we'll find out

Electronic shelf labels? FMC

Anybody else feel like being an FMC just means “congrats… it’s your problem now?” 😂
Is it just my store or is this everywhere?
I swear everything somehow becomes File Maintenance’s problem whether it’s our job or not. We spend all week trying to maintain the integrity of the store while everybody else can destroy it in 30 seconds. Plug product wherever. Move displays. Ignore planograms. Shove new items wherever they fit… then somehow it’s Pricing’s fault. Then one sign is missing or one price is wrong and everybody loses their mind. Is Pricing just chronically understaffed everywhere or is my store special? 😂 Feels like we’re expected to keep the entire store together with next to no help. I can have a 12,000 tag night and it’s just “figure it out.” No help. No backup. But the second Receiving needs help, all the sudden I’m the receiver too. Multi trained hasn’t helped me one bit. It just means I get everybody else’s jobs added onto mine. And let’s not forget I’m constantly getting summoned to go check something while there’s literally 25 people standing around doing absolutely nothing remotely helpful. 😂Everybody’s more than happy to make my job harder, but nobody wants to help maintain the integrity of the store. Then they wanna bitch because a sign is missing or a price is wrong. Like… you literally created the problem. Now we’re hearing about electronic shelf labels. I’m at a show and tell store in NorCal, so if Safeway wants to try something new it somehow always ends up at our store first. We were the pilot store for the Lexmark tag platform too. Had it for like 8 months before it officially rolled out… then it went live and like 2 weeks later we were right back to the old system. So now I’m wondering if this is gonna be another Lexmark situation. Is ESL just NorCal right now or are other divisions getting it too? How’s this gonna work with NICIs? Subscription changes? Resets that are already a complete shit show? Are we actually gonna save time or is this just gonna create a whole new list of problems for Pricing?
I know I hate change 😂 and the fact that we have to switch to the honeywell touch screen guns. I love my old school gun. Anyways. End of rant. Would love to hear from other FMCs because I’m really curious what everyone else is seeing in their stores

Recently got hired, completed my online info, went in to do my I-9 and now nothing. I keep getting told the “director” will call me. But yet nothing. I was told how much the dpt I’m joining needs help too. Is this just a sign of things to come? 😬

Can someone explain the Commodity planner?for produce

Someone that works produce I Seriously need help with this, I keep hearing a lot of stores still aren’t getting with the program and using this “tool” every time it seems we’re being “trained” to use new tools it’s always rushed.. not everyone learns at the same pace.. I get that closers are supposed to pick certain items for fresh cut at night and bring them to the back for fresh cut to use in the am.. I’m more so on the screen side of things, how do we get to this app, what does one input and who hits finalize? Is it the closer or the morning person that finalizes? Or both? I also had not told my closers about it because i saw it as an added duty on top of what they already have to do that most times they “can’t” get done… always running behind, sometimes we come in on am and depart is not faced, there’s tons they could’ve done that they didn’t do.. lots of product in the back that should’ve been worked out but for some reason wasn’t… I figured I’m gonna give them this now too and they’re gonna do even less of that other important stuff… also Again.. always rushed and they’re always pushing something new to learn or there are sooo many other things to try and stay on top of it’s hard to get to everything.. tags are always a thing even when it’s not Wednesday because people move them or knock the off where they are… I get it all the time tags tags tags… temps, donations scanning, sales and purchases, short day tracking… so hard to get to everything and that’s not even all of it.. display sizing… almost got dinged in that the other day.. guys came in and tried to say I had my romaine hearts display set to 8 cases which I was just WTF?? 🤨🤨 me??? 8 cases that’s way too much…They ended up checking my iPad and saw I had it set at 3… the mistake was on their end on their device.. how quick they are to point fingers and make one look bad in front of their boss.. once they realized it was on their end… oh the system just needs to get in the groove of things… 😑 also adding bad or unsellable product to the Wincapp… been having issues there too… I’m adding them on there with pics and some how our ops isn’t seeing them on his end and we’re getting emails about I’m not doing it… I’m sure most you have seen those emails.. that list the few stores that have done it.. but anyway all that venting aside.. help with the commodity tool 🙏🏼

Finishing loads on night crew

Is anyone else struggling to get the loads thrown on time? My guys and i hustle but we are only scheduled 5 and 6 hour shifts on load nights and sometime have to stay later and I get talked to about it. Like last night we all had to stay an hour over to get the load thrown and I had to skip facing paper to avoid actual OT because my SD is trying to bonus so shes writing everyone up. 🙄 i feel like night crew has turned into a shit show

Turns out I was right

So on Thursday last week I was pulled in the office for a corrective action. I had no idea what I had done so I was like no we can take care of this with the union rep present.

I had that meeting today and it didn't go as planned, it was kinda close to what I thought it was for but it resulted in a suspention pending. So needless to say that my job hunt continues and the union rep will be filing all the stuff he needs to file to contest it.

My storngest evidence will be that I have worked inside Safeways either as a vendor or employee for close to 2 decades without any discipline and all of a sudden we get a new ops and I have had nothing but discipline since their arrival. Obviously if I win this I cannot stay at that store so fingers crossed.

FYI: stroller organizers make great night crew mobile work stations!

I've got everything my team needs in this cart. Trash bags, hazmat bags, shelf clips, shrink wrap, spilsafe, tape, box cutters, etc. I can post additional pics if anyone is interested in seeing more of the set-up.

Definitely don't care if I dox myself with this one. If you work at my store, you recognize Philbert (the dino on the telxon holster).

UFCW Health Benefits

I have worked at Safeway (Alberta) for 2 years, I have never used my benefits before.

I added my husband as my dependant and the system says he is eligible. However, we bought new glasses for him and the reimbursement was not eligible. What have I done wrong? I submitted the receipt.

What should I do to have the reimbursement?

Lunch time

Im not the brightest but when I worked at safeway we were told that there was no lunches on a six hour shift because u take a break every 2 hours. I found out that we are legally obligated to a lunch if working more than 5 hours but it can be skipped if my manager and i approve. I was never informed that I had to approve anything and the only thing I can recall to those days was signing something that i was told that related to my time clock. I wasnt even asked to skip lunch before hand. My schedule would be like 1-7 . please correct if im wrong.

Edit: My question is: Was my lunch skipped for the time I worked at safeway and it there anything I can do if so?

👋Welcome to r/SafewayWorkers - Introduce Yourself and Read First!

Hey everyone! I'm u/EzMrcz, a founding moderator of r/SafewayWorkers and Safeway Worker in NorCal. I have 16 years with the company and spent 13 years as a manager before stepping down and joining the union. I see a lot of opportunity to improve both our unions and the companies we work for by us workers coming together and demanding a seat at the table. Private Equity and Business Unionism seem to be ripping the soul out of an industry I have really loved to be a part of. I see the personality and human connection to our relationship with the food supply being stripped away and that has pushed me to decide to get more active as a worker and union member.

This subreddit was created as a moderated alternative to r/Safeway for workers wanting a more productive space to discuss and bitch about work and maybe how to make it better.

What to Post

Post anything that you think the community would find interesting, entertaining, or inspiring. Feel free to share your thoughts, photos, or questions about working conditions, union and non-union differences, management and employee relations, whatever.

Community Vibe

Let's build a space where everyone feels comfortable sharing and connecting. We're all in this together and this is one area of life where we share a commonality. Those are harder to find in these times. Spam and trolls and anyone whose primary intent is to sow division and discord will be invited to return to the fertile grounds of r/Safeway

How to Get Started

  1. Feel free to introduce yourself in the comments, but I understand why some prefer to remain anonymous.

  2. Post something today! Even a simple question can spark a great conversation.

  3. If you know coworkers that would enjoy more community, invite them to join.

It's kind of wild what we can do when we come together and decide to do it. This power extends beyond r/SafewayWorkers and into our workplaces and communities as well. Solidarity, fellow workers.

How many years of Service do you currently have?

I’ll go first…

34 years

I can technically retire in less than a year but I’m not even 50 years yet so maybe too young and health is somewhat decent

*specifically* tell me your local union flare request, or any flair request

I saw the thread but I don't know every single local union of everyone here. Please drop it in the comments so I can make flairs. Add departments if requested, it will be done. Thank you!

SD is inconsistent and targets employees

*edit to add that I have included a copy of my grievance documentation if anyone is interested minus personal and identifying informaton.*

Our store has been stuck with the same SD for nearly 3 years now. We have gone through a fair amount of ASDs but we are stuck with the SD for what seems like eternity. I have never had so much trouble with a job than I have in the last 6 months.

We have gone through a lot of changes as a division/district and because of those changes I believe that gave the SD new life, as if we had not gone through those changes I believe our SD would be on the bread line.

The SD is just terrible. They are inconsistent with corrective actions, and when they do give someone a corrective action, it's for something about a dozen people in the store do as well and those employees are walking around without a care in the world because they haven't been written up nor will they get written up.

I am currently the target of the SD right now. I am working on filing a grievance with the union as well as reporting someone in corporate.

New changes coming soon?

I work night crew in the Nor Cal division. My boss said there will be some changes coming soon to the store and that it’s “good” but my boss can’t tell me what it is. It’s driving me nuts and I want to know. Any managers here want to give me the scoop?? I hate sudden changes lol.
