I plan on making my first visit on June 9th. I bought a prestige pass because I plan on hitting other Six Flags parks this year but am looking for any suggestions for the park.

Park opens at 11 and I get in at 9 becosee if my pass. What coasters open at 9? Obviously I want to ride as much as I can before I have to leave for the airport and hope that extra 2 hours will give me a few extra rides before the general crowd enters the park.

Also - how is the food in the park? I’ll eat breakfast before I go but will probably eat something while there. Any suggestions for something of decent quality but not too expensive?

For the last few years, I’ve been a roller coaster enthusiast in theory only. It had been 10 years since the last time I (age 27) rode one. Well, I got bit by the roller coaster bug pretty bad recently and decided I just had to make a trip down to my home park, Six Flags Fiesta Texas. Opinions stated here are those of someone who has ridden fewer than 20 coasters in my life and still gets scared on roller coasters. That said, I had an absolutely fantastic time.

Park experience
Fiesta Texas is very clean, well decorated, and the admission ticket was reasonably priced. The huge quarry wall is of course awesome. I enjoyed the different theming of the 4 sections of the park. Some parts of the park are approaching Disney level immersion… I said approaching. We heard some pretty good live music from some Selena impersonators as we walked through the center of the park. Security was super chill about me bringing my own food into the park. My boyfriend got the dining pass and had mixed reviews for the food.

Chupacabra
This is such a nostalgic ride for me. This was my first roller coaster ever at the age of 12 back when it was known as Goliath. So it seemed fitting to be my first ride back after a long hiatus, as I didn’t know if I was going to be more susceptible to motion sickness than I was as a kid. Quickly I discovered it’s as much fun as I remember. I remembered this one as being “not too scary” but that first drop of the first ride of the day actually had me shook!! I was laughing hysterically the entire time. I was surprised at how forceful it felt on some of those inversions. Definitely a bit of a bumpy ride in places. This one was a must ride for me if only for nostalgia purposes, and I was very satisfied with it. I really love the Chupacabra rebrand, it’s so much better than the generic “Goliath”. I also think it’s very cool how this one survived Hurricane Katrina.

Road Runner Express
I still felt like I needed a bit more of a warm up before hitting some of the big ones. For a family ride this one is pretty fun. We sat in the back row for this one and it packs a bigger punch than I remembered. My nickname for this one is the Mini Rattler. I felt sufficiently warmed up after this one so we headed to Superman.

Superman
I’d ridden this before but don’t remember enjoying it as much as a kid as I did today. Wow, I might have enjoyed this one the most out of any of the ones we rode. Got a back row seat. That first drop off the quarry wall is just picturesque. Such a good paced ride, nice speed and forces. It really feels like you’re just cruising through the entire run. I found this one almost relaxing in a way. I liked it so much I had to get right back on as soon as the ride ended. Plus, the Superman statue at the top of the loop.

Poltergeist
This one was a favorite of mine as a kid. They added a bunch of cool haunted house stuff to the ride queue since the last time I was here, and the spooky atmosphere was amazing. We waited for the front row, which was worth it. That launch is probably the best part. It’s also cool when it gets low to the ground.

Iron Rattler
Oh my god. WOW. Holy shit. This one was the highlight of the day. This was actually my first time on the Iron Rattler because I was always too chicken as a kid (I also never rode the original Rattler) and the first ride of the day that I hadn’t already ridden before. First off I absolutely love the Texas theming of this ride. The snake head and rattle tail on the train are so awesome. The leather seats and the saddle horn on the restraints were also a nice touch. We weren’t able to get the very back row, but we got in the last car. We totally got psyched out when we sat down as we were asked to exit the train after we already had our restraints down, and had to wait another 10 minutes. I have to admit I was scared as shit going up that hill. And that drop was every bit as insane as I thought it was gonna be. My brain had trouble just processing the visual reveal of the drop as we got whipped down that hill. I loved the section on the quarry wall and then of course the cliff jump. This ride gives you almost no time to take everything in, it’s just crazy element after element in rapid succession and then it’s over. Seriously, the first drop, especially in the back car, had to have been one of the most intense moments I’ve ever experienced…like, period, in my life.

Wonder Woman
This one was built since my last visit to the park and I love the Raptor design so I was excited to try this one out. It was closed all morning so we rushed over as soon as we realized it was open. The sign said 35 minute wait. It was over an hour before we got on this damn thing. They had to evacuate a train that stopped before reaching the platform and paused operations for like half an hour. Luckily, we got to wait in this neat Greek temple watched over by a concrete Wonder Woman statue (surrounded by flames!) and covered by a nice sunshade. When we finally got on the ride, I enjoyed it. It’s another one of those that goes so fast you barely have time to process what’s happening before it’s over. After waiting in line for over an hour, I wished the actual ride was longer than 30 seconds. I didn’t like this one as much as I was hoping I would, but would ride again, preferably with a shorter line.

Almost Dr. Diabolical
Well, the day ended on a bit of an L. After riding Chupacabra, Superman, Poltergeist Iron Rattler, and Wonder Woman, the last coaster on our list of must-rides was Dr. Diabolical’s Cliffhanger. This dive coaster was easily my most feared coaster in the park. I was staring at it all day, watching those wide-ass cars go over that 95-degree (!!!) drop, thinking “not yet… not yet…” By the time it was the only big coaster left to conquer, I still felt my knees go weak and my stomach get watery every time I even looked at it. I told my boyfriend, who up until that point had been the by far more coaster-cautious between the two of us, “I’m not sure if I can do it. I think I’m too scared.” He convinced me to get in line by telling me 1) he was scared on all the rides I made him ride before but he still did it, 2) I would be disappointed in myself if I left without riding it, and 3) I could definitely handle it if I handled Iron Rattler. Plus, he really wanted to ride it, he said. So I begrudgingly entered the queue for Dr. Diabolical’s. I was genuinely dreading riding this coaster. My hands were clammy, and I could hardly crack a smile at the little robotic owl that talks to you in the line as you go through the “mad scientist’s lab” pre-show. My limbic system was begging me to turn around and for the love of god just go ride the damn carousel or something. Still I marched onward in the line like a dazed cow to the slaughterhouse floor. I told my boyfriend “If we’re gonna do this, I don’t wanna sit in the front row.” He said “I do!” He took off for the front row line and I followed after him. Cars were dispatched and the line between us and the gate got shorter until we were the very next in line. I started trying to hype myself up and convince myself this would be fun. The previous car arrived. The riders disembarked the car. The silver gates in front of us swung open. We stepped out onto the platform. I walked to my seat. Then, I felt the relief previously known only to prisoners minutes from execution when the governor calls. The ride op asked us to go back behind the gate. She said “We’re gonna have to pause operations due to inclement weather,” as rain began to splatter over the track. We even waited at the gate for another 20 minutes in case the rain passed, but the park was 10 minutes to close at 6pm, heavy rain was moving in, and we had a long drive back home. So we headed to the car. I was surprised to realize on the walk towards the park’s exit in the rain that I felt quite disappointed. I had gotten myself all the way to physically putting my ass in the seat and I still didn’t get a chance to give Dr. Diabolical my adrenaline to power her creatures. So for now, I have unfinished business with the good doctor.

I’ll definitely be heading back to Fiesta Texas soon, and then hopefully travel far and wide to ride roller coasters around the country. So begins my life as a roller coaster fanatic.

Howdy Fellow Texans

We are driving in from Dallas on Saturday to come for a birthday trip. Obviously El Nino has decided to time itself with Memorial Day Weekend.

How likely are a ton of rides not going to be running? Any advice for making a good day out of an unfortunate weathe chance?
