Younger Dancers? We need contemporary music.

Non-square dancers think we dance to country music, yet we know that's not true. I tell people we dance to popular music. In the last month we danced to the Beach Boys, the Doors, the Beatles, Van Halen, Neil Simon...wait a minute, we dance to OLD popular music.

I am convinced that we need to record current popular music if we want to attract a younger audience. Yes, there is a small percentage of millennials and and Gen Zers that like the oldies. We use that as our excuse not to invest in recording new music. But the vast majority of them listen to music created in the last 10 years.

I don't record music. I know absolutely zero about how to go about making this happen. But I am sure it costs money. Shooting from the hip here, should we start a fund that is available to square dance callers that want to record current popular music?

Help me out here. What do you think of that idea? If you had money to invest on increasing the popularity of square dancing, would you spend it on getting current music produced, or would you spend it on something else?

I look forward to this conversation!
