Which of these Starfleet roles is genuinely the "hardest" job on the ship?

Last month, we asked what the easiest job in Starfleet was, and the results were pretty clear.

This month, we’ve flipped the script. Let’s face it, every role has its own challenges, after all space is disease and danger wrapped in darkness and silence. But which role actually has the most difficult day to day?

  • Do Captains feel the weight of countless lives and the Prime Directive every single time they open their mouth?
  • As an Engineer, are you constantly forced to perform miracles to keep the ship in one piece?
  • Is the job of a First Officer the worst? Dealing with tedious complaints, keeping everything running smoothly and playing devil’s advocate in every situation?
  • Does the Helmsman really have it easy? Steering a multi-million metric-ton starship at speeds so fast you’ve flown through something before you’ve ever seen it?
  • Is being a Medical Officer a constant battle to whip up cures to never before encountered plagues in minutes while somehow keeping the crew positive?
  • Are Operations stressed beyond belief trying to manage the logistics of a starship in deep space?
  • Do Science Officers have to know everything about everything all the time?
  • Is Security/Tactical a nightmare when you’re constantly on edge and worrying about everyone else’s survival?

Which of the listed roles do you think has the hardest job? Tell us: Why your pick? Which specific Starfleet character had the hardest time with their role?

What species would you like to play next?

We love our characters, and we love the diversity that is on offer in our Intelligent Lifeform Index, so today's question: if you had to make a new character today, what would you pick? If you're an old hand at this or finding us just for the first time, I'm curious to know what people are taken by.

Wiki Feature - Hall of Honor

One of the oft-hailed strengths of our community is our comprehensive and high-quality Wiki (https://wiki.starbase118.net/). As the Chief of Wiki Operations, I want to to highlight some of our most important, most notable, and most interesting articles, which I'll do in a recurring "Wiki Feature" series here on Reddit.

The SB118 Hall of Honor is a ledger of all the various accolades we employ in the Fleet to recognize our Players' contributions. While there are also Service Ribbons, intended to award our characters' for their contributions to mission success or personal growth, the Hall of Honor is all about celebrating Player excellence.

Badges are awarded for out-of-character (OOC) participation and incremental achievements or singular contest wins. Examples include prior winners of our Halloween Avatar Contests or Writing Contests, as well as contributors Wiki Editing initiatives and other Taskforce Participation.

Coins are generally one-time special commemorative tokens for the whole Fleet. Coins may be displayed on any characters' pages and user pages of simmer/writers who were present for the fleetwide accomplishment or event. Examples include the 30th Anniversary coin or the Year of the Commodore Coin.

Awards are a big deal. Each year, the Fleet hosts an Annual OOC "Awards Ceremony" where we recognize some of our best and brightest (as voted by their peers!) The Awards Nomination Form is open year-round for anyone inspired by their fellow writers to submit them for consideration for an Award - with some being presented on a per-ship level and others being awarded to only one individual each year fleetwide. Examples include:

  • Duty post awards are awards given to individuals in a designated duty post, department, or division. Only one recipient from the entire fleet is selected for recognition with a duty post award each year and only one duty post award can be won by each person per year.
  • Rising Star Award: Awarded to members of Lieutenant Commander rank or higher who show great promise in many facets of their participation in the group, and to whom we look to as a future leader.
  • Sarpeidon Award: Awarded to a simmer who has made outstanding contributions to the 118Wiki.
  • Xalor Clan Xifilis Award: Awarded to simmers who overcome a disadvantage throughout simming.
  • Pathfinder Award: Awarded to individuals who have taken great care in mentoring other members during their early stages of simming and beyond.
  • And so many many more!

If you are a member of the Fleet and haven't yet taken a look through the various accolades (especially the Awards), I highly recommend you do so and start considering who on your ship or throughout the Fleet you want to nominate this year!
