Topaz Photo AI and Video AI - Anything I should do?
I'm dreading the whole Adobe situation with Topaz. I had previously purchased legacy versions of Video AI Version 7.1.5 and Photo AI Version 4.0.4.
Is there anything I should do to protect myself and the ability to use these programs?
I obviously don't want anything to do with any subscriptions, especially Adobe subscriptions.
Are there any plugins, models, or anything else I should download so I can continue to be able use these two programs? I currently have active access for Topaz Photo and Video, but I assume I will lose access to these two when my subscription expires.
DVD Upscaling (The Ali G Show + Others)
So I got a couple of DVD series that I'm looking to upscale to 1080p. They are The Ali G Show and Classic Albums (docuseries).
Currently, I use Google Gemini for guidance, but there's been a ton of issues and misinformation there. It recommended the AI model Proteus and then Iris, and while those look great 98% of the time, hallucinations (which inevitably happen) completely kill the vibe.
What I've settled on is the Artemis AI profile, but keeping the all important input condition at: High Quality, despite that not being true (see picture above of Nirvana debuting "Smells Like Teen Spirit" live for the first time for reference). Again, when the input condition is set to Medium or Low Quality, hallucinations happen. Again, this kills the vibe.
Artemis is a long-haul upscaler taking about 8 hours to upscale a DVD to 1080p with a 5070 ti. I anticipate this to be a 3 month project getting all these shows upscaled, and I wanted to share my workflow to see if anyone has any recommendations. Thanks!
- Get Interlaced information via MediaInfo App > View
- De-interlace DVD via Hybrid
- Upscale in Topaz Labs with Artemis with the Input Condition Set to High Quality
- Additional Settings 1: Pixel Type: Square pixel, Video type: Progressive
- Additional Settings 2: Recovery detail: 20, Grain: Gaussian (Amount: 3, Size: 1, Density 1)
- Additional Settings 3: Codec: H265, Profile: Main10, Bitrate: 35Mbps, Container: MKV
Looking for info on Gigapix a) what models I can run locally with no internet connection and b) how long upscales would take on silicon macs like M5 and M4?
I am trying to run some upscales with Gigapixel, and for reasons, I can't be connected to the internet as it is NDA work and that's just the situation. No internet connections.
I have tried a few models and I can't tell if they're suuuuuper slow or if they're just not doing anything because there is no connection.
EG a simple standard max 2x took about 5mins on the Mac. Thats... crazy.
A redefine realistic, the progress bar doesn't seem to move. I can't tell if it's not processing because that model is a cloud model or if it's just so stupidly slow.
Is there a document or page that lists a) what models are cloud only, if any, and
b) any kind of guide as to what kind of times I should expect for each model, given a rough input of say 1k and a 2x or 4x, or 2k and 2x or 4x.
Thanks
Starlight Precise 2.6 and Topaz Video 1.7 Update
Shocked no one has posted about the update here. I had been using Starlight Precise 2.5 but there was always a layer of digital noise that was just too noticeable for me.
Starlight Precise 2.6 has finally got rid of this and 2.6 with level 3 sharpness legit looks incredible. And there is no sign of AI artifacting whatsoever. My source was of decent quality tho just very blurry/compressed.
I only tested a few clips. But im extremely happy with the update. However, one thing to note is that the level 3 sharpness takes longer to process. level 1 feels like 2.5 in terms of processing time.
My 5 minute, 1080p30 clip on level 1 took about 2 hours 40 minutes. On level 3 about 4 hours 45 minutes. There is noticeable difference in sharpness 1 through 3. I suppose if you plan to do post processing, or two-pass, you can stick to level 1 for faster results. But all levels look better than previous Precise 2.5.
BTW my setup includes: CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 GPU: Nvidia 5080
I had enough of Topaz
I was trying to upscale an HD 60fps video using Starlight mini. After waiting 40 minutes it failed about mid export. There was of course no way to continue the export, or at least understand what happened. So I restarted the export and again, after 40 minutes it stopped with an error.
I already wasted about 2 hours and had to finish the video so I decided to buy some credits, hoping I could upscale the video faster.
I'm writing this as the video is stuck at "queued, waiting for resources" and "processing".
So what on earth did I just pay for? I just paid to get cloud compute and you're telling me to wait.
ANd how is there no way to continue an upscale after my computer sweating for 40 minutes straight?
Is this really the best AI upscaler on the market? Because this was the last straw for me.
Does anyone know any more reliable alternatives?
Starlight Precise Making Everything into a Mosiac
Anyone have this issue, when i run starlight precise it turns my image into a mosiac. Attached is the generated image, the 2nd more clear one is the original. I've gone back and forth with chatgpt and checked codec types and everything checks as normal.
can anyone help me out?
Hi, I'm going to be straightforward: I need some help from kind people. I have an idea to enhance videos from the 2008 Russia–Georgia war. The footage taken by Georgians is blurry and heavily degraded, making it hard to see properly. I wish I had the right tools, but I don't have the money and I refuse to pirate software because that's wrong.
The only way I can achieve this goal is to ask if someone could help enhance a few videos taken during the war so they are at least somewhat clear and viewable. I'm not asking for much, just a bit of help, and I will absolutely give full credit for your work. I want to document these videos on YouTube to preserve them.
Please help, and thank you!
Model rec (1080p BluRay rips to 4k)
I'm new to Topaz and AI upscaling. I have a bunch of movies from the 90s and 2000s from mostly Blu Rays I've ripped and store on my plex server. I want to upscale many of them to 4k using topaz. What is the best model for taking already decent looking 1080p (and some 480p).
Running on a m5 max MBP. Looking for a nice balance of speed and quality. No HDR.
Reason being I recently upgraded my home theater to a monster 158" screen with a native 4k projector (JVC NZ800) and at that size, the difference between 1080p and 4k is actually very noticeable.
Perpetual License holder, new video suite is asking for subscription
I am a founding customer who got the perpetual license before it moved to subscription only.
I have an update on my screen saying that I can update to the new video suite with no additional cost, but every time I upgrade, it locks me out of the app, saying that my subscription is expired and I need to pay for a new subscription.
What is the deal?? It says I can upgrade for free, but then it says something completely different upon actually updating.
What is the best workflow for enhancing a mediocre but not terrible copy of a rare film?
The only version I can get of an old Argentinian movie is in this condition according to mediainfo

1104X480. It's not atrocious or unwatchable but it's bad. What setting and model can I try to up the resolution a bit? I'm happy with getting to a full 1080p
Help with Topaz Studio and Adobe Premiere
I downloaded the Topaz plug-in for premiere to try to help with some out of focus footage on a short film I shot, and I was pretty underwhelmed by the results.
The original was in 1080p, I used proteus and 2x upscaled. Then used iris since there were people in it. Both didn't really help.
Are there settings available on Topaz Studio that are going to be able to help me solve this issue? Or am I just out of luck?
