From 1.0.4 to 1.8.3: How UltraPod Has Grown — and What’s Next
I’m the developer behind UltraPod and the creator of this community.
UltraPod began as a click-wheel music player. After seven public updates, it has grown into a personal media companion that brings together music, podcasts, Apple Watch, Home Screen widgets, customization, and useful offline tools.
The music experience has improved with every release. Large libraries load and scroll more smoothly, while Cover Flow, lyrics, queues, and local playback are more reliable. UltraPod now handles offline artwork with local storage, compression, and deduplication. Background controls, playback progress, audio interruptions, and system media information have also received major fixes.
Apple Watch support started with a dedicated Watch mode. Later updates added native list scrolling, smoother Digital Crown control, edge-swipe navigation, accurate queue positions, and better artwork handling. Watch appearances now support solid colors, custom images, and synchronization through DIY presets.
The DIY system has also become much more complete. You can save, apply, import, export, and restore full appearance presets. Built-in presets such as Classic and Black & Red offer an easy starting point.
Version 1.8.0 introduced two major additions:
• Podcasts, with OPML, RSS, XML, and TXT imports, listening progress, podcast queues, and system media controls.
• 16 offline Mini Apps for calculations, conversions, focus sessions, bill splitting, cooking, scorekeeping, breathing exercises, reaction tests, 2048, dice, and more.
The latest release, 1.8.3, added Little Monster Home Screen widgets. You can see the current track, artwork, and artist, then control playback directly from your Home Screen. This release also improved offline music storage, purchase restoration, favorites, notes, background playback, scrolling performance, and sustained heat.
What’s next
I’m currently designing more widget appearances. The plan is to expand the widget collection to 10 complete style sets. These designs are still in progress, so the final details may change.
New UltraPod themes are also planned for upcoming updates, giving everyone more ways to personalize the player.
UltraPod has grown far beyond its first release, but the core idea remains the same: bring the feeling of a dedicated music device into a modern, personal experience.
