I built an AI tool that detects counterfeit vinyl records — the first of its kind
Hey everyone. I’m a solo developer in Melbourne, Australia. Vinyl counterfeiting has been getting worse — UK police just seized 6,498 fake records worth £260K — and there’s no digital tool to help collectors check before they buy.
So I built one. It’s called Vinyl Guard. You take a photo of the record label, the AI analyses it against authentic references — checking label colour, typography, print quality — and cross-references against a database of known counterfeited records including Beatles, Bowie, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, and Blue Note pressings.
You get a genuine or counterfeit verdict in about 30 seconds.
It’s not perfect — accuracy improves with more data — but it’s the only tool like this that exists. I’ve already been in discussions with the vinyl industry’s trade association about partnership. Would love honest feedback from actual collectors. You know more about vinyl than I ever will.
