How do you do research on old deceased veteran family ?

Here is his grave stone in the family's pantheon, it mentions Korea but i am unsure if he participated in it directly or in some other conflict.

I wanna learn more info on him, but most of our elders are gone, physically or mentally. Shoudl I just walktz into the local veteran's office or what do you reccomend me? Thank you for your time.

what happens if someone's kicked out for behavior issues, and is diagnosed with a brain tumor after?

I'm only wondering now because I wanted to know if there's some kind of process that comes after that discharge and diagnosis. My uncle was kicked out in the 70s for that reason, and was diagnosed with a brain tumor shortly after. I'm curious if there's now some kind of process that comes with that.
