Sir Alexander Cunningham, the founder and first Director-General of the Archaeological Survey of India, remarked the following about the Bhumihars (more commonly known as Babhans).
These were his observations:
- Clearly states that it's the ENEMIES of Babhans (a term used before the members of this caste started accrediting the title Bhumihar in honour) who propagated slanderous theories against Babhans.
- Their Babhan name suggested strongly about their Brahminical origins.
- Again, Bhumihars shouldn't be confused with Bhuinyas, who are an aboriginal tribe.
