Huckleberry Trail Etiquette

I’ve been walking and cycling on the Huckleberry for years, and I’ve just recently noticed a significant uptick in people walking/running/etc on the left side of trail. It is not that big of a deal when there isn’t much traffic, but the trails are about to get a lot more crowded with the students returning and I’ve already had a few encounters on my bike where it was confusing trying to figure out what the other person was going to do.

I’m thinking folks just aren’t used to trail activity and maybe are treating it like the roadway. I’ve even had people look at me as though I’m in the wrong for riding on the righthand side.  Is this something anyone else has noticed?

On the Christiansburg section of the Huckleberry, the Parks and Rec department has put up small signs at a number of the trail entrances - right in the center of the trail - reminding people to walk/run/cycle on the right/pass on the left. I thought about contacting our Parks and Rec department to see if it might be possible to install some similar signs.  I know there’s a sign under those little wooden kiosks, but it’s sandwiched in among a longer list of rules and not everyone looks at those. Having a small sign right at some of the major entry points might be helpful, but I thought I’d ask here first as well, in case it was just me.

Help! Is Uber available near Mountain Lake Lodge??

Next week I’ll be staying at Mountain Lake Lodge in Pembroke, arriving by bus in Blacksburg.

Does anyone know if it’s easy to get an Uber or a similar ride service in that area? I would need a ride to the lodge when I arrive, around 4 PM, and especially a ride back to Blacksburg early in the morning, around 7:30 AM.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Best place for car repair

I'm from Roanoke and don't know much about the area. Anyways I have an older car a 2004 Ford escape and yesterday it started overheating to the point it was smoking I'm trying to find a shop that will tow and repair at a decent price and not rip a hardworking single self supporting female out of every dime. I don't mind paying but I have been ripped off since I don't know much about vehicles and just want someone honest. Thank you

Spartan X, pest control, and other rants

We just had another Spartan Z person come by our house to not sell us solar by trying to sell us solar. We tried politely twice to tell him to leave and finally had to tell him to get off our property. Not to mention they skew facts trying to make it sound like they are a great bargain.

I am so tired of these companies coming by my house trying to schlep their wares. They use GIS to find out neighbors' names and lie that our neighbors are using their service.

I keep forgetting to ask if they have a permit and reporting them to the town.

And before you say not to answer the door, I was sitting on my front porch reading a book.

Has anyone had luck with a no soliciting sign or other means?

Parking Near Alexander Black House

I am not from the area and am going to a training at Alexander Black House this weekend and it just occurred to me to look into parking options. Their website says to park either on 209 Clay SW lot next to police department or Kent Street parking garage. The Clay lot looks very small so want backup options if full. Reviews for Kent Street parking garage are not very good and trying to book online or even view unavailability isn't working. I get to my training at 8:30ish and was considering the Blacksburg Library, but are they hawkish about parking before opening? I am an awful parallel parker so really would like parking lot recommendations if possible!!

Steppin' Out

I usually go to Steppin' Out and walk around for an hour and go home. IDK what it was about this year, but I felt there were better vendors. I saw some of the same people, but a lot more cool things.

Also there weren't any political booths which was a relief.

Did you go and what did you think?
