Making friends
It’s the summer and town feels quiet, but any advice on making friends as a new family with a baby?

Going to do a day trip to the area from Roanoke tomorrow for some thrifting. Any good local spots that I should know about? Thank you in advance!
Hi everyone,
I'm an incoming international graduate student for Fall 2026, and my friend and I are currently looking for off-campus housing in Blacksburg.
We've found several good and relatively affordable 4-bedroom apartments (places like University Terrace and a few others), where the rent works out much cheaper per person than leasing a 2-bedroom or signing individual leases. The difference is around $50–150 more per month if we can't fill a 4-bedroom unit.
The problem is that it's just the two of us right now. Many students we've contacted either:
I've posted in multiple Virginia Tech housing and roommate WhatsApp groups over the past couple of weeks but haven't had much luck.
Has anyone else been in a similar situation? Are there any other places or platforms where VT students actively look for roommates? Or would you recommend waiting a bit longer before signing a lease?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
What are your favorite coffee shops to work at?
Are there any good lunch deals in the area?
Hey r/Blacksburg (or wherever this is headed), wanted to share a few things happening this week as part of Historic Smithfield's 250th anniversary programming. One schedule change to note due to the heat.
July 2, 5:30 PM — "July 4 vs. July 2: Are We Celebrating the Wrong Independence Day?"
Montgomery Museum of Art & History, 4 E Main St, Christiansburg
Dr. Dan Thorp gives a talk on the historical case for July 2 as the "true" Independence Day. Snacks and refreshments provided. Should be a fun one if you're into the weird quirks of how history actually happened vs. how we remember it.
July 3, 4:30 PM — "Roots & Routes"
Now moved indoors to the Community Room at the Christiansburg Public Library due to this week's heat. Two talks on the Preston family's journey to the New River Valley: one on what brought them from Northern Ireland to settle the southwestern Virginia frontier, and one on Colonel William Preston's role navigating multiple conflicts during the Revolutionary Era. Speakers are Jef Graham (genealogist) and Michael Hudson (Executive Director of Historic Smithfield). Free and open to the public.
July 4, 10 AM-1 PM — Independence Day Celebration
Historic Smithfield, 1000 Merry Oak Way, Blacksburg
Living history demonstrations (blacksmithing, leatherworking, spinning, colonial militia), live music, Floyd Historical Dancers, a petting zoo, family crafts, food trucks, and readings including the Declaration of Independence.
Heads up: outdoor activities are wrapping up at 1 PM instead of the original time because of the high temps expected. Historic House Tours will still run until 3 PM if you want to keep exploring indoors out of the heat.
More info at historicsmithfield.org if you want details on any of these.
i’m still fairly new to the area so i’m not too sure how it all works, are there places that help with paying rent? this has been a hard month so i’m short some and where i used to live there was local resources
any help/advice/answers are appreciated !
The company, formerly headquartered in Roanoke, had recently settled a class-action lawsuit for $7.3 million, after plaintiffs alleged securities fraud.
In Christiansburg, but this sub is far more active.
I am moving out of the area for another part of VA and we have to toss a lot of stuff. Some of this stuff may be things that are salvageable, possibly some furniture. Some of it is actually trash that needs to go to a landfill or something and C’burg garbage pickup won’t accommodate.
Can anyone recommend someone for a one-time bulk pickup of various items? I don’t want to necessarily have to order one of those dumpsters from Waste Management or something that they come pick up. Would rather throw my business to someone locally.
I’m looking for any restaurant or retail job that is hiring immediately. If anyone has any recommendations or referrals, I would greatly appreciate that!

The 9th District is Virginia’s most Republican congressional district, but that hasn’t stopped three Democrats from wanting the party’s nomination to challenge GOP incumbent Morgan Griffith.
My wife and I will be visiting the Blacksburg area over July 4th weekend and are partly using the trip to get a feel for whether the area could be a good fit for a future move.
We’re 37 and 34, DINKs, so I’m especially interested in hearing from grad students, faculty/staff, alumni who stayed, or locals who know the area well.
We saw the Roanoke Freedom Festival and may check that out, but we’d love recommendations closer to Blacksburg, Christiansburg, or the surrounding area. Good restaurants, breweries, patios, live music, outdoor spots, walkable areas, neighborhoods to explore, or anything that gives a real sense of everyday life would be great.
Also curious how the area feels for people in their 30s without kids. What would you recommend we check out while we’re in town?
I’d like to know people’s experiences: how much maintenance was needed, how the lease was handled, how communication went.
Hi all!
I'm coming this weekend for an event and would like to stop in a few places while I'm there. What's the best place to buy houseplants in Blacksburg?
I am looking into getting a moped, and I was wondering if it was safe to ride in the roads, and the trails, during the snowy/icy Blacksburg winters? I usually go with the bus but my apartment is far this year, and a car isn’t an option atm. And do we need a parking pass for mopeds if we live off campus?
I heard e-bikes are an option too. But the problem with e-bikes is that it’s ALWAYS packed on the sidewalks, so I would have to drive on the road, and that would have to be 35mph at least. And would we need a parking pass for e-bikes?
Context: Me and my mama are both disabled, my mama has a pup in training currently and she is extremely well behaved (won't bark, stays close, and focus quick) but she is small and she has gotten some less then legal requests from a local restaurant. --
Abby's Restaurant and Bar, we know it we love it right? The place with a DOG as it's logo! Well the owner has refused service and been incredibly rude to my mother because she has a service dog (he claims its because she doesn't look like one) my mama has joked before about getting someone with a mini horse as their service animal (the only other ADA recognized animal) to come in with her, she will even pay! But in all honesty anyone with a service dog or horse (ADA recognized animals) would be lovely to just come and share a meal at Abby's Restaurant and Bar, a place with a dog for it's logo. -- Edit: I am more than willing to answer any questions anyone may have!
Mid-40s, M, looking for a gym. Have literally never worked out before and need to start. I hate physical exercise, but it's time to get serious.
Any good places for a newbie, and also, personal trainer recommendation?
Thanks in advance!
The board of visitors has held two dozen listening sessions as it looks to replace longtime President Tim Sands.
As the electric utility seeks regulatory approval to increase its rates, it’s also proposing measures to address the sticker shock of high bills during the winter or when settling up a fixed-payment budget plan.
