How does cold email work and what do cold email agencies do?

I've always wondered how cold email actually works. You're emailing total strangers who never asked to hear from you, so what makes that different from spam? I'm guessing these agencies handle things like setting up domains properly, building lead lists, and testing messages so emails actually land and get replies. I just don't know how much of that I could learn myself versus what really needs someone experienced.

Are you still hand building your email automations in 2026, or letting AI generate the sequences?

I just built a billing nudge sequence by hand, the full card reminder flow: wait for 7 days after sign up, remind them to add the card, wait for another 5 days, remind them to add card again for the last time, after 2 days(14 days in total) notify them that they have been downgraded to the free tier.

What I actually want to know: in 2026, are you still building lifecycle sequences like this by hand, or just prompting your way through?

My take is that however good the AI gets, it can rarely deliver the experience that only the person who knows the product and the customer can. It will happily generate a complex sequence, but most of the time only you know how the timing, the tone and the exit conditions should actually feel.

so where do you land? Hand build for the human touch, or hand it to AI or do it yourself but only in English(prompting)?
