India is importing sugar because of ethanol? The real story is maize.

Today the government allowed sugar imports for the first time in nearly ten years. 10 lakh tonnes at zero duty till October. Prices hit a record of ₹5,500 a quintal, up from ₹3,900 a year ago.

So obviously Every headline right now is about sugar. And everyone is attributing it to ethanol

But here is my take - sugar is the smaller story.

The actual story is maize. In 2024 India's maize imports went up 7,940 percent year on year. That's not a typo. India was a maize exporter for decades, shipping around 1.9 million tonnes a year to Bangladesh, Vietnam, Malaysia, Nepal. In one year that flipped. Exports crashed to 0.5 million tonnes and India started importing.

Why? Because the ethanol program started buying maize in bulk.

Once sugar production started tightening (which is exactly why the government is importing sugar today), the ethanol machine needed maize to feed on. Ethanol distilleries started outbidding poultry farms for the same maize the country eats and feeds to chickens. Prices went from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 per tonne. Chicken prices rose - Imagine your protein requirements can't be fullfilled due to ethanol :p

The Poultry Federation of India formally asked the government for duty-free maize imports because they were losing the auction to fuel.

The government keeps repeating the ₹1.98 lakh crore in forex savings number, since 2014, from crude oil India didn't import.

But nobody is netting it against the new imports the program is creating. Sugar today. Maize since 2024.

I spent two months on this and made a 17 minute doc. It's the only video you'll need to understand every facet of India's ethanol program - https://youtu.be/LrgrNPp0lvY

Finally E10 is happening!

I always had a thought that this E20 is going to end and there will be a breakthrough for petrol cars recently I saw some videos say that government may revert to E10 so it's gonna happen...........

Is the E20 outrage dying?

Just like any other indian protest people forget in 10-20 days and move one while having to deal with the consequence of the incompetent politicians and bureaucrats actions...

Is e20 rlly being accepted by people ? My Baleno mileage dropped from 18-19 to straight down to 12-13 that's drop of 6 kmpl .....

Are the people accepting their vehicle's destruction ?

Vision 2030 - CIBIL Score 750+ now mandate for 1 Litre petrol on No-cost EMI

Future takes 2030:

Went to an Indian oil petrol pump to fill up a 2 wheeler. The tank was on reserve, but instead of handing me the nozzle, the attendant redirected me straight to Desk #4: Fuel Finance & Loan Verification Officer.

After 25 minutes of document verification and biometric scanning, here are the updated Indian Oil Financial Services terms for 2030:

0.5 Liters (Starter Pack): Instant approval via Aadhaar OTP. 3 easy monthly EMIs.

Full Tank (Luxury Segment): Requires 3 months' payslips, 2 guarantors (preferably government employees), and your original property documents.

Defaulting Penalty: If your EMI bounces, recovery agents will show up at your house at 3 AM with a pipe and a jerrycan to siphon the fuel back out.

The Petrol vs. Diesel Scam: Paying 116 vs 100 while getting worse mileage due to Ethanol. Who is actually winning here?

It makes zero sense that petrol owners are getting penalized so hard right now.

We are paying significantly more at the pump (116 vs 100 for diesel), our cars emit less pollution than older diesel engines, and now our mileage is dropping because of forced ethanol blending.

So we pay more money for less efficient fuel, while driving cleaner cars. How is this a fair tradeoff? 🤨 tanking our fuel economy while charging us a premium is just wild.

How is this a sustainable or fair tradeoff for the consumer?

Why indians aren't using this to avoid damage from e20 fuel?

E20 nature of absorbing water is causing issues with the cars so why not simplying keep a product like this and use it while filling on fuel station?

This will seperate the water from fuel and you will get only e20 on tank

Since IIT Kanpur claims to have tested e20 petrol, below are the questions I have for them

  1. Which vehicle was tested? Was it a vehicle manufactured before 2023 or after 2023?

  2. How many KMs was the vehicle run?

  3. Were the immersion/compatibility tests per methods such as SAE J1747/J1748 equivalents?

  4. What was the baseline established for e0 and e10 for a comparison with e20?

  5. Did the test results include the reports for the mechanism for measuring corrosion or degradation of metals in the fuel system/engine and the final readings for the same?

  6. Does the test take into account the possibility of phase separation of the fuel?

  7. Does the test report mention the effects on elastomers/rubber (hoses, gaskets, seals, O-rings) and plastics (volume change, tensile strength, hardness, elongation, etc.)?

  8. Did the test report include details of any calibration or ECU adaptation needed for oxygen content and energy density of E20? If so, are the optimum configurations published?

Weird Smell from Exhaust

Hey, has anyone else noticed a strange, strong, kinda pungent smell from their exhaust after putting E20 fuel in their car and bike? Just wondering if it's just me!

RG showing problems of e20 in e20 compliant car.

Saw a post posted by INC and RG where he is showing problems with e20 in e20 compliant car. Bro takes a step back when he was supposed to leap forward.

Edit: this is not to make joke about him, but Pre 2023 vehicles are more in danger compared to e20 compliant vehicles. So the point here was to highlight the bigger risk. People flooding his post with memes already. I do appreciate him talking about it.

Is it just me, or is adulterated petrol making a huge comeback?

Hey everyone,

Apart from the usual E20 ethanol blending issues, straight-up fuel adulteration (milawat) seems to be spiking across Delhi-NCR.

Lately, after fueling up, I’ve noticed:

  • Engine knocking and weird vibrations.
  • Sudden mileage drops.
  • Clogged fuel filters (confirmed by my mechanic).

We are paying almost ₹102+/litre just to get our engines ruined by water or cheap solvents.

Is it possible to separate Petrol and Ethanol?

If its possible, is it sustainable?
