Las Palmas for 3 months Oct–Dec — real talk (German remote worker, Hyrox/runner, wants to actually experience local culture)

Done the basic research. Here for the unfiltered version.
About me: German, employed remotely, into Hyrox, running (road + trail). Want to respect and engage with local culture — not just exist in a nomad bubble for 3 months.

Housing
• 3-month stay — any realistic path off Airbnb pricing, or am I paying tourist rates the whole time?

Daily friction
• What broke your routine in week 2–3 that you didn’t see coming? Small stuff that stacks up
• Noise levels: bar noise, scooters, construction — which neighbourhoods actually escape it?
• Which supermarket or market do locals use? Not the one I’ll walk into by accident

Hyrox & fitness
• Is there a Hyrox-affiliated gym or functional fitness box in Las Palmas? Anyone training for Hyrox events while based there?
• Best running routes directly from the city — road and trail — that aren’t already flogged to death on Strava
• Interior hikes (Tamadaba, Tejeda) — bus actually workable for a day trip or is a rental car essential?

Culture & real integration
• Realistic ways to meet Canarians and long-term locals — not other nomads. Sports clubs? Language exchange? What actually worked for you?
• Things foreigners do that visibly annoy locals — what are the unwritten rules most nomads miss?

Masapalomas Dunes

Hi all,

Thinking of going for a romantic walk on the dunes next week when we arrive. I seen mixed reports that tourists roam freely around them and others sticking to the designated path, can anyone help me whether you really need to stick to the path?

Reliable taxi for early morning pickup in the middle of nowhere?

This is important, because I have an early morning flight and will need to be picked up about 4:30am. I'm also in a fucking dead zone on the island, so can't receive or make calls. Basically, I need to be able to book this online (satellite internet) and trust they'll show, because if they don't, I'll be completely fucked.

So for your money, what taxi service is hands-down most reliable on the island? Who will definitely show up in the middle of nowhere (Galdar area, but I'll literally have to send them a Maps location) at 4:30am?

Travel to Firgas

Hello all,

My partner and I are travelling to Gran Canaria next week. We’ll be based in Las Palmas for 2 nights and Maspalomas for 8.

We’re hoping to visit Firgas, I initially thought it would be easier to visit whilst based in Las Palmas, however Apple maps is suggesting public transport would actually be quicker from Maspalomas?

Could anyone recommend the most efficient way to travel to Firgas from either Las Palmas or Maspalomas? I’d prefer not to hire a car. Any estimates on taxi fares would also be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

In Las Palmas for 4 nights

Hey all, I will be in Las Palmas from Saturday on my own. Anyone got any recommendations of what to do and places to eat and drink?

Some of my likes: beach, hiking, walks, padel, craft beer, electronic music (house, techno, DnB, dubstep)

Also, if anyone fancies hanging out to do any of the above, I'm open to meeting some people 😊
