Hi all, I’m looking for some practical advice from people who know these cars well.
I have a 2016 Jaguar XF-S 3.0 diesel, around 85,000 miles. I bought it from a dealer in October 2025 and, unfortunately, it has now suffered a catastrophic engine failure.
The car is currently with Jaguar, who have investigated it and advised that there has been serious internal engine damage involving piston-to-valve contact. They are recommending engine replacement and have indicated a cost of roughly £13,000. I’m waiting for their full written technical report and exact quotation.
The car is otherwise in good condition and, immediately before the failure, was probably worth around £10k–£12k. In its current non-running state, I’ve been offered less than the diagnostic work from Jaguar to identify the fault, so simply scrapping/selling it as-is would crystallise a very large loss.
There is a separate consumer dispute with the supplying dealer over pre-sale servicing and inspection, and I may ultimately be able to recover some of the losses through the court. However, I do not want to make the repair decision on the assumption that I will win that claim. I need to decide what makes financial sense if I have to fund the repair myself.
Before purchase, the dealer specifically told me that they checked timing chains and belts on cars before delivery. They also initially agreed to replace the cambelt/tensioner/water pump as part of the deal, but then said they had found paperwork showing the cambelt had previously been changed in Jan 2024, so that work was not carried out.
I also had engine-management problems earlier this year, although I don’t yet know whether Jaguar considers those relevant to the eventual failure.
What I’d really appreciate is advice from owners/technicians on:
I’m not looking for legal advice so much as the practical Jaguar-owner view on what you would do with the car from here.
Thanks. Any experience with replacement 3.0d engines, especially on the XF/XF-S, would be really useful.
For the life of me I cannot find it and Gemini is useless. If someone has a picture to reference for the front and back I’d be grateful. I have a 2015 Jaguar XF RWD 3.0 Supercharged if that matters.
Please and thanks!!!
I’m thinking about buying a 2020 jaguar xf s with the supercharged v6. It has 54k miles will it be a good car to buy or are there any warnings or anything I should look out for or anything I should know
